There actually isn't that much wankery on here for DT's standards iirc. There's less extreme examples of instrumental wankery on here than Scenes From A Memory, although that is obviously the superior album and I'd definitely agree that this where they started to go downhill.

Chronologically, it's the first album where you can hear dream theater playing and soloing randomly whatever the fuck comes to their mind. It is a bit bizarre when an awesome intro evolves into a musical nonsense.

Rudess' best performance on here though.

Rudess is definitely at his most creative here. It's a really unique album for Dream Theater, due in no small part to the atmosphere he adds (particularly on the first disc).

Album's only flaw is that it's not 9 hours longer

Back when DT still sounded like they were having fun while composing quality music.

Rudess' hammond solo on blind faith might be his best with DT

Absolutely.

Disc 1 is top tier DT to say the least, but disc 2 always bored me.

Disc 2 is more Straightforward, song oriented, and fun imo. The production is a bit tame, but the engineering seems good. Petruccis tone now is unbelievably dull

I find disc 1 is really experimental, varied and cool but disc 2 is more traditional DT and more moving overall than the first disc. idk I think they're both equally great.

I actually think disc 2 is more straightforward than typical DT, which is why I found it refreshing. Disc 1 is filled good quality length prog songs.
