Better start than mine bach. My first "heavy," band was Slipknot lol. Then I moved on to Alesana, and this band. Yeah, I know, Plebian tier.

Never listened to Slipknot. As far as getting into heavy music, Korn-> Linkin Park -> Avenged Sevenfold -> As I Lay Dying -> Mastodon -> In Flames and so on. Kind of strange, seeing as all the kids I knew were waaay into Slipknot.
