Their later stuff has this creepy vibe with diminished chords that bands like scarlet and spitfire tap into as well, not many people doing it like that

Damn, rateyourmusic has this album pretty low. Lower average than Versions even, which I hear is their worst (I’ve only listened to their first 3 albums so far).
How do ratings differ on rateyourmusic vs Sputnik in general? I don’t like the site or layout, just mere curiosity if anyone is bored and has an answer for me.

mostly align on the big stuff but sputcore is a term for a reason. lots of metalcore/post-hardcore albums from the mid 00's and early 10's are higher rated here. this was always a metal oriented site and that was what was popular at the time. rym is more indie/pop/rap driven i'd say. then there's stuff that pops up here organically that doesn't take off much on rym because of a good review that spreads the word.
someone on rym actually made a list about this phenomenon lol

Haha nice I’ll check it out.
Interesting. I didn’t even know this was initially a metal site. But it all makes sense now for sure.
Thanks man!

This and Versions are great/unique post hardcore albums

Yeah. I tend to prefer post hardcore — fucking love Thursday, PTW, la dispute, underoath, etc — over straight hardcore. Deftones as well, who I will still argue are hardcore adjacent. still love hardcore, especially Knocked Loose and from what I’ve heard of Converge. But I like some melody and variety added in.
Seems that YCBY is considered PTW’s first big foray/metamorphosis from hardcore to post, but Tear from the Red I would definitely consider post. Just a phenomenal transitional album that really shows what they had up their sleeve for their 3rd album.
Very curious to see which direction they take going from YCBY to Versions, then to The Tropic Rot.
Super hyped for the new album Friday. The two singles show they have absolutely still fucking got it.

there's a track with trumpet on the tropic rot, that will tell you everything

listening to some of this for the first time. i can def see why people saying the new singles feel like a continuation of this. def not as exciting as TOOD or YCBY tho

OOD is way more influential on the genre but this is way more interesting imo

Never even heard of this “publication”, but Distorted Sound Mag gives the new album a 9/10.
Anyone else seen any early reviews/word? Gonna look around and see if I can find more.

That song alone cemented the new one as a 4.5 for me. Early AOTY contender for sure.
