weak by maiden standards but still an enjoyable spin

I think people are so hard on this because it’s the first misstep following 7 of the greatest metal albums ever made but it’s certainly not as bad as Virtual XI

VXI has three certified hood classics. Higher highs on that one.

Yeah I'll takes VXI over this buttrock radio slop every day. The dropoff from the magnificent Seventh Son is huge.

"Yeah I'll takes VXI over this buttrock radio slop every day."
Not only is this better than Seventh Son but the dropoff from X Factor to Virtual XI is far steeper. Awful take. Fucking lol @ people calling The Assassin and Hooks in You "some of the worst songs" by this band.

Cas I know you’re a notorious troll but calling this better than SSoaSS is a stupefyingly ageusic take.

I mean, they played their hand by calling Hooks and Assassin "good", those tracks are hilarious.

The Assassin would easily be in the upper third of Seventh Son in terms of progressiveness if it were on that album.

If you want my actual edgy takes on Maiden though (shitting on this album is too easy), then:
* Fear Of The Dark is almost as bad as this and the t/t falsely carries it's reputation.
* The X Factor is better than all the albums after it. It actually has atmosphere behind its noodling and is more restrained than the reunion material. Everything from Brave New World onwards, while mostly very good, just blends together. The X Factor stands out.

Fear of the Dark is easily worse than this and kind of started their lack of quality control. I can get behind the X-Factor take though BNW is somewhat stronger.

I grew up on Fear and think it’s immaculate. The solos alone

Yeah I can’t make it through Fear in full these days. X Factor I really enjoy if I’m in the right mood, though I do think reunion Maiden tops it with most of their efforts. Final Frontier is my controversial pick for clunker.
