First listen here: some amazing tracks on here, but it feels inconsistent. On first listen, it feels like there are too many skippable tracks (especially in the middle section). I’m sure some of them will grow on me though.

I was truly miserable when I first heard this album 6 years ago, but it marked the beginning of an extended foray into the emo abyss. I owe this band, The Get Up Kids, and The Promise Ring for being such a huge influence to me early on. Great stuff.

Cool man, def will. I’m going through the darkest period of my life right now while suffering from one of the worst bouts of depression I’ve ever experienced (I have depression but it comes and goes).
All that to say it’s a good time to get into emo. Went through JEW’s discog (I know only their first few are really emo, but Clarity is the best I’ve heard so far). Then checked out Mineral (amazing), now these guys. Also ordered the Texas is the Reason album.
Any other recs? Thinking about checking out Braid and The Get Up Kids. Worth it?

Penfold - Amateurs and Professionals is a perfect mini album that's one of my favourite things from the emo scene. Christie Front Drive's two releases also might appeal, Lark, if early Jimmy is your thing (huge influence on Static Prevails era JEW)
sorry to hear about that though. depression is a dick, we'll get there

ah fuck man I really hate to hear you're going through a hard time, I was recently put back on lexapro so I can relate. All the best to you moving forward. And as to not bombard you with every half-shit emo album I know, I'll boil it down to 3 relatively accessible favorites:
Strictly Ballroom - Hide Here Forever
empire! empire! i was a lonely estate - What It Takes To Move Forward
Foxing - The Albatross
Bonus: Literally anything involving Mike Kinsella, but namely Owen
Also yes definitely check both Braid and TGUK, Frame & Canvas and STWHA respectively are both incredible, the latter being arguably my favorite emo record of all time

This guy’s voice gives off serious Kurt Cobain/Layne Staley vibes — like a mix of the two (and I know these guys are from Seattle).
Also, this actually feels more grunge/alt rock than emo to me — at least the emo that I’ve heard. As far as this being considered the best emo album of all time, I think Mineral’s two albums and Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity are superior.

This album isn't emo, it merely influenced emo. It is an amazing album tho.

@Larkin
Yeah! You are right about the vocals.
I find it odd that you don't really consider this emo though. Minerals primary influence is SDRE.

I dunno, Mineral sounds emo to me while most of this doesn’t. Can’t really explain why.
Funny, but Jeremy then manages to sound British on How It Feels. Watched a few live videos and holy shit that guy can hang. I mean, his vocals were absolutely impeccable. Almost superhuman.

Empire! Empire! sounds the most emo-ish from what I’ve heard (pretty new to the genre tbh), closely followed by American Football.
But these guys? More apt rock, especially on LP2 and How it Feels. Hell, even Mineral sounds pretty alt Rock a good portion of the time, with some emo mixed in.
Maybe I just don’t grasp what emo truly is though lol. Entirely possible.
Not that any of this truly matters. Good music is good music, bad music is bad music. That’s about all that matters.

Ahh It seems that you think that twinkly guitars is the core of emo.
Post the year 2000, most emo bands sound like American Football but before that the modern sound wasn't a thing.
Mineral and SDRE sound like alt-rock because the genre grew out of indie/alt and post-hardcore.
