I'll Still Destroy You is the best song agreed, Doof just sucks

The most vacuum sealed and artificial sounding National song is a Flag favourite - still waiting for the sensation of surprise to hit me :D

Song doesn't remind me at all of Radiohead, think you might be overselling the pomp and frills. I love it for the same reasons you hate it; SWB is at its core very defeated and tattered, Destroy You adds a spark right at a point in the album where it could really use it.

"is the most 'bolted on' incongruous moment in their entire catalogue"
Please, the skramz in Available's bridge will always hold the crown for this

Also Turtleneck is an entire song's worth of incongruousness if we want to get into that

the melody is dreary with an airy backing...and that isn't necessarily awful in concept but the wafty melody is fukkin annoying and the bells and whistles are distracting....and the ending literally could have been bolted onto one of five songs on the album, it would have mattered not
it's shit but the party line is that it's a great National song so whatever :/

Hahaha I forgot Turtleneck. Word, kinda fun song though

Turtleneck is faaaaaaaar superior to 'Empire Line' and 'I'll Destroy' - that's a sedative 1-2, most boring song pairing in the Natty discog
actually I take that back - it'll be two on the new album but I can't remember anything about the latest album now it was that bad. A bit like those two songs stretched over an entire album tbh
we have got to the point Matt is desperately scratching down the back of the sofa for interesting vocal melodies now poor bloke, he's lost/losing it

It's one of the least dreary songs on the entire album lmao. It's in the top 2-3 most energetic tracks on SWB...
Bells and whistles are necessary at some junctures otherwise it would just be Matt mumbling through a toilet paper tube. But then again you love baritone vocals minimized to the nth degree, so maybe that's just your taste.
The ending is a tad incongruous, which I already admitted, but it couldn't be tacked onto four other tracks besides Destroy You. Trying to imagine it bolted onto Carin right now and chuckling a bit to myself...

Pretty sure it could have been worked into 'Empire Line', 'Guilty Party', 'Walk it Back'...even the end t/t as a wtf moment.
'Destroy You' is energetic (in places)...yet also dreary...plus it's an over fussy studio doodle...and it has incongruous sections - it's all these things and more
It's a total mess
'Empire Line' is similar. Actually less of a mess if anything, and a slightly better song. 'Destroy You' is def the weakest on SWB for me.
I'll never understand why they put these two fidgety Radiohead-alike tunes with 'so epic' crescendos next to each other in the tracklist - makes them a real sore point, just skip them, it improves the album no end.
Exactly the same song twice in a row, great.

So it's the perfect National tune? Got it.

that really isn't the recipe for a perfect National song

if the climax of Empire Line and Destroy You is what you turn up for on a National album may I recommend just going to listen to a more interesting instrumental post-rock'ish or string based band :/
very run of the mill stuff

The best National song is Keep Me In The Open by Gang of Youths

Does say a lot about The National and SWB that I still rate it a 4.5 - mostly based on the six best tunes
