One of my favourite moments on Opeth's discography is the opening of Hessian Peel, with that low E hum and the gentle guitar solo on top of it, sounds like a mourning indeed

exaggerating a bit because damnation and deliverance are worse for sure, but their whole middle era just doesn't have nearly as much ~feeling~. the music is less inspired to my ears and the production does it no favors.

So annoying how the album could have been basically cleanly divided in half between growls and no-growls but they had to put Derelict Herds in the bonuses and so the balance isn't there in the standard tracklist >:|
Anyway probably their best for me these days. It does a bit of everything with late career maturity (ignore ratings)

Even if there are aspects of this I find underwhelming, or even a bit annoying (that last minute of Burden mainly lol) the amount of ideas and creativity in the epics, especially The Lotus Eater, never ceases to astound me.
