I read an interview from '97 or so where Stephen said he was really into the recent Depeche Mode album at the time (Ultra) which is hardly the typical Meshuggah/chugging metal guitar affair people seem to strongly associate with him. the Hearts/Wires thing was weird but I'd wager he plays a bigger part in the softer/weirder side of Deftones than people give him credit for

SNW was almost entirely Chino driven and it's their best LP sooo.. hard to judge on how the outcome of the album will be whether its driven by Chino or Steph as Gore obviously shows. A blend of both I guess would be preferred tho.

Chino's vocal work actually annoys me on this album.

I prefer s/t over this other than a couple tracks.

SNW was not all Chino, it was both Chino and Carpenter, just more Chino-leaning. Carpenter was responsible for Rats, Rapture, and Kimdracula.

Who was responsible for deftones greatest hit "pink cellphone" tho? That's all that really matters

wouldn't have guessed Carp was responsible for Kimdracula. that kinda seems like a quintessential Chino track to me

Pink cellphone is the ultimate mid-album palate cleanser that every artist wish they could have thought to create first.

It was though, the band and Chino himself has stated in interviews that the whole writing and recording process was incredibly dysfunctional and disjointed during the SNW days and that everybody contributed to his own part but at the end of the day he was essentially the one who had to put everything together and make the most important decisions together with the producer.

Yeah pretty sure the band don't hold this in that high regard because it was a really testing time for them.

This one has some of my favorite Deftones songs, but as a whole, it has never really clicked with me. Whenever I read about the circumstances around which it was made, it makes a lot of sense.

Pink Cellphone gets brownie points for including the phrase "buttfucking residue"

I like this one. Might be my favourite after White Pony. It's hard to tell with Deftones tho
