Drifter: rational, is cool, probably homemakes spaghetti
Other guy: Irrational, is lame, microwaves spaghetti-o's.

Damn normies with their peanut reptilian brain, can't possibly comprehend the complex dynamic time signature changes and perpendicular guitar riffs

Album Rating: 4.5
Yeah, except only a normie would think these are perpendicular riffs. It is extremely obvious they're horizontal.

No offense to Drifter, but it is glaringly obvious someone who dislikes tech thrash would hate this. Like, why would you even try it lmao
Also, concept takes this from a 5 to a 7.43 minimum

Drifter doesn't get the multi-dimensional riffwork and the angular drum patterns backed by polymorphic vocal patterns because of his gosdh darned peanut brain.
What the fuck am I saying

"drifter: is objectively right in that the purpose of ratings is being subjective
other guy i'm too lazy to go look at the name of: NORMIES REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
"Drifter: rational, is cool, probably homemakes spaghetti
Other guy: Irrational, is lame, microwaves spaghetti-o's."

So in summary, the primary purpose of ratings here is showing other users how much you like or dislike an album so that people know what to recommend or not recommend to you in the future? That's a fascinating angle.
I'm also interested in the angle of experienced users that obviously love certain albums and genres and take part in threads, but without showing any ratings (or who wiped all the ratings they seem to have had before).
E.g. @tempest?

Yeah, whatever. I gave an opinion, just like anyone else. But i didn't disrespect anyone, unlike that tempest guy.
If you're rating just for the sake of rating or because you feel compelled to have a list of things you rate, well i pity you, really. Ratings are a way to recommend stuff. If you don't understand that...well, try thinking harder about it. Why do you come to sputnikmusic ? To chat ? I come here to discover new things and, as i do, i rate it so that others will be able to find it as well. That's my way of using this website.
But please, enlighten me ! What would rating albums in a genre you have no clue about achieve ? What would happen if all the members here would go rate stuff they've only heard once and don't care about ? Go on, i'm waiting for real arguments as to why someone would want to rate anything he's ever heard...
To add to my point:
If you don't like a genre as a whole, how could you be a judge of what is good and what isn't within that genre ? And if you just rate stuff because you've heard it, then you're lowering the ratings of albums in a genre you don't even listen just because you've happened to hear it ? No, that doesn't make much sense, sorry.
But i might be wrong, here, i never said my opinion of how ratings should work is the only valid one. I'm just waiting for someone to explain why or how what i said wouldn't be true.

Throwback to when this band broke up because i was hating on them

Ooh nice the average dropped

what someone rates an album is how much they enjoy an album. it is as simple as that.
I don't have ratings because I think rating things is dumb -- you end up with discussions like these and people taking them WAY too seriously
|
| |
you don't need to "have knowledge about a genre" to rate an album in that genre.

"I don't have ratings because I think rating things is dumb -- you end up with discussions like these and people taking them WAY too seriously"
There will always be dumb discussions. But having ratings (and some sort of musical profile) is a way of sharing (and discussing) your musical tastes, likes and critiques with other listeners, which does make sense on a community website like this one, don't you think? Hell it's why Sputnik HAS ratings.
Just my 2 cents.
