Not liking songs isnt a nitpick, that's ridiculous

my enjoyment for TPAB reaaally declined. i find it hard to listen to its songs out of the album context, but im not particularly compelled to listen to it front to back either. dont think ill ever listen to it again tbh lol
this on the other hand is still pretty good

"Never said he was perfect, but the shit I don’t like about Kendrick is trivial compared to the shit I do like."
..........k

So if you like more things about an artist than you dislike you should just not discuss them

I simultaenously find noler's comment disagreeable and yet I do remember people like idnuf (who I loved) who would be like "kendrick is trash white people music, listen to z-ro" or whatever and the sort of gatekeeping there did piss me off a bit. like he's not "real" enough etc.
but he needs no defending really in a macro context obviously, it's just a matter of wanting to change my stupid friends' minds. idnuf if you read this i'm sorry you're cool with me

agree that swimming pools has aged terribly however i will always respect it as a genius marketing strategy
dude wrote a song about how alcoholism ruined his family and framed the chorus so that it could become a frat party banger. major props

No.
|
| |
That kind of gatekeeping is obviously obnoxious and, at least in my case, only used ironically, but I don't think there are any instances of that going on in this thread rn anyway

i mean z-ro rules so i can agree with that, doesn't mean kendrick doesn't have some damn good material under his belt though

yeah I agree it's not at all happening here, just wanted to air my grievances
Romulus I feel like that whole album has that sort of contradictory energy in a cool way. Not as obvious a conundrum as the "alcoholism-dirge-as-banger" thing going on at all times, but it's definitely not a record that pulls you in one direction only. idk. I think I tried to hit on that in my contributor yearend writeup in 2012. missing the old robertsona : '(

Hes one of the best rappers of the 2010s. Hes just not beyond criticism. I cant really think of any hip hop artists of any era that are tho so.....
|
| |
I mean 90s is my era and every single 90s rapper either got terrible at the turn of the century, or died. And the ones that died were still homophobic af when they were alive
|
| |
The roots is maybe the only exception, there are a couple albums I havent gotten around to for one reason or another but they are the only example I can think of where they havent released a bad album (as far as I've heard)

I can't figure out what my favorite era for hip hop is tbh.
Edit: The Roots are GOSPEL

80s just because of spoonie gee's "the new rap language"

90s >>>>> (like for a bunch of other genres)
|
| |
Lol, 80s stuff was just too cheese for me, even the really late 80s stuff. There are lots of classics but its just a goofy era
|
| |
Even some of the really early 90s stuff was borderline too cheesy. As much as I adore pete rock and cl smooth for instance... they really tread that line

I think you and I feel about the same on the issue. Yeah 80s it mostly just feels like it wasnt yet coming naturally to the artists. 90s is where it's at, though there's good stuff everywhere. including "the new rap language" which is just straight 16th notes the whole time, great song, just wanted to plug "the new rap language"
|
| |
Haha speaking of goofy
