"It would appear so, I mean jeez this is probably one of the most carefully crafted alternative records I've ever heard"

the tracklisting is literally just the songs in alphabetical order

on an individual track basis this thing is fantastic but I can not get through this as a whole record anymore

even on first listen, thing was like a gut-punch of depression for me after only like the first 4 tracks

and yeah I realize this is radio "they're supposed to be depressing" head but I haven't felt that way about any of their other albums

As far as quality goes... i mean yeah Daydreaming was really well recieved but those two singles were terrible choices imo. Decks Dark, Ful Stop, and Present Tense would be good choices (i think Present was made into one later? idk)

"the ridiculous amount of very specific, very emotive sounds that all surface up at the perfect times."

I agree with this on a couple of tracks where the sounds are perfect, but half of this album just doesn't cut it for me

also, the 2 tracks released as a bonus disc for this are pretty much my favorite from the whole thing

yeah, i know. it works for me. and just because they're in alphabetical order doesn't necessarily mean that was all the thought the band put into the order...

@talktothehead
i do agree that Decks Dark or Present Tense would've been better choices for singles, yes

the whole concept of how they sequenced (or didn't sequence) this record almost makes me think they didn't even really manually decide which 2 were going to be the previews, they just put out what would be the first 2 tracks from the album

if anyone would use a method of preliminary single releases as a "fuck you" to the standards of the music industry, it would be them

i mean, it's definitely possible those were the two they chose tho? i think that's more likely than Radiohead just throwing out the first two songs. idk tho

I mean thats a nice thought but i think youre putting a cool concept behind whats really just laziness. Its not a fuck you imo, that was in rainbows

I didn't say it wasn't possible

but it's entirely likely to me that both were cases of "well fuck, that works, let's just do that" with both the tracklisting & singles

associating this album with the phrase "fuck you" at all is kind of funny

and well shit. if that was the case i'm astounded even further at how well it works for me. eh *shrugs*

even if I'm not huge on how the thing plays plays as a record, I highly doubt it was mere half-assery. more than likely they spent however long trying to get the perfect sequencing and then one day, one of them just pulled up the thing in ABC order and they all went "well fuck, that works"

I think this album has near perfect sequencing given the track listing. However, the mysterious coincidence of the track listing, whether or not it was intentional, leads me to believe that "perfect sequencing" is a mere illusion that we graft onto an album if we listen to it and enjoy it enough...

That being said, Radiohead does a damn good job at it with their albums.

I haven't actually listened to it that way but those songs both rule so hard that I don't doubt you

"'perfect sequencing' is a mere illusion that we graft onto an album if we listen to it and enjoy it enough..."

nah, some albums definitely stick out as "good lord that track doesn't belong there" though listeners are def easier on such things than the artists themselves are
