"swimming pools" is ultimately fine but +1 on it not aging well. even "bitch don't kill my vibe" a bit...

"money trees" does not get old though, just goes

Again, probably just due to oversaturation tho

"alright is fucking terrible" Pots, what is WRONG with you??

But anyways, I think Cartoon and Cereal is perfectly rated. Somehow a lot of Kendrick fans don't even know that song exists.

I wonder if latter-'10s hiphop conditioned us as well? not sure about this one but lush guitars and synths sort of seem especially out of favor in the minimalist trap enviro--and whereas that latter subgenre has never appealed to me greatly, being bombarded with it might convince me that the fuller-bodied alternative is a bit corny? who knows im just thinking out loud here

Skirts corniness but rarely crosses the line imo.

The clown themed roasts were definitely the highlight of this thread.

I think he generally avoids it, or at least the fruits of his labor far outweigh the negatives of the corn. I started to doubt myself a few years ago when he was on a lot of other artists' tracks and was doing the sort of "DNA"-ish "Power....pain....pleasure...perfection" boilerplate raps. Or at least I sort of remember in being this way, not sure I could name any songs lol

he rules tho. and "DNA" is a complete bop for the record, just a good example of the kind of thing that sometimes grinds my gears about kendrick

"Pots, what is WRONG with you??"

I was born with a genetic condition called aural analysosis which gives me an incredibly discerning ear and penchant for transcendental music preferences that boggle the minds of mere mortals, throwing them into a rage of blinded confusion

I can understand that dig at swimming pools, even if I disagree, but bitch don't kill my vibe??? Was that one massively popular too/does it come down to overplaying?

Let’s bring this back around to Swimming Pools and why anyone would think that song aged poorly. Is it the outro?? Because that song is too damn good. The verses are perfect.

And I get not liking i, especially the album version. But u? First half of that song is wack but the second half has this sloppy in a good way vibe. Those Majora’s Mask horns >>

I find most people who try to find fault with Kendrick tend to be nitpickers, or only fuck with hood shit. It’s pretty obvious he’s ahead of most of his peers.

"bitch don't kill my vibe" was everywhere for like three years in my experience, any place where you could play music that said "bitch," it was there. had a longer shelf life than anything else on this record

i was never a HUGE fan of that song tho honestly, it's very good but sort of goes in one ear out the other for me

?? Just because hes ahead of his peers doesnt mean hes perfect? I find people who try to pretend kendrick is faultless to lack a critical lens and tend to be the type of people to be mad that someone has his shit rated 4/5 instead of 76/5

Never said he was perfect, but the shit I don’t like about Kendrick is trivial compared to the shit I do like.
