Every once in a while I listen through this record and I always come to the same conclusion: this is probably the best album ever written.

the craziest thing to me after all these years about this album is just how damn weirdly accessible it is. I've shown this to so many non-metal-heads who don't even consider death metal to be real music, and this album always fucked with their heads and made them question their presumptions, every single time

Well said. I have a buddy who’s really into grunge, hard rock, maybe some Slayer or Testament at the more extreme side but not really into heavier stuff. I gave him this CD and he said he had it on repeat for a full 5hr drive for work. He was blown away.
Best album of all time agreed.

yeah i remember showing this to an indie rock/folk homie who was obsessed with AJJ, wilco, sufjan stevens, brand new, etc, and a year later we caught up and he told me this one now one of his favorite albums of all time. He told me he still wasnt a big metalhead or anything but symbolic taught him to appreciate metal more. So ever since this is basically the first extreme metal album ill show to people curious about the sound.

Honestly yea, I agree if I were to try and introduce people to the genre this would probably be the album I reach for.
The vocals in particular walk a really fine line of being death metal vocals but also somehow being more approachable than the vast majority of other of death metal bands. Chuck is underrated in this aspect.

This is definitely one of the best gateway albums for extreme metal (and possibly even metal in general), and I think a lot of it comes from the balance between accessibility and diversity. You get elements of death metal, prog metal, thrash, melodeath, and traditional metal... yet all of them blend seamlessly, so none of the genres overpower each other or feel out of place. And on top of that, the riffs and melodies are catchy as hell. So the album is a good way of exposing listeners to a wide variety of different styles, while ensuring that they don't get overwhelmed in the process
ITP may be my favorite Death album, but it's probably one of the last Death albums I'd recommend to a casual listener, due to how experimental and strange it can be (relative to their discog at least)
