More jazz less 70's prog worship please.

Biggest ''[2] hard'' ever

Definitely (3).
P.S. I mentioned this in another thread... although I often wait for the full album release to hear new material in context, I don't think I'll be able to hold out for this, unfortunately it's mostly due to my lack of confidence (i.e. we don't entirely know whether we're getting 'good Opeth' or not yet).

Yeah I get that. Feel the same. I've overplayed singles prior to album release before and that does harm how you experience the record as a whole. But ''we don't entirely know whether we're getting 'good Opeth' or not yet.'' is exactly how I feel. Too much apprehension.

The solution might be to spin it a couple of times when it's first released, to get a feel for the new sound (if there's anything 'new'), just enough for a little teaser. Then abandon it until the album is released. This is probably going to end up being easier 'in theory' than in practice.

I'd love to be able to hold out until the full album comes out, never gonna happen though.
I remember being in denial for weeks when I didn't love the t/t off Sorceress.

My thoughts exactly. I'm going to give this strategy a go. I remember what happened with Sorceress, overplaying the t/t (why did I do that!?!) and especially The Wilde Flowers and Will O The Wisp, it didn't do the album any favours.

Still in denial.
I prefer to think I am asleep and having a nightmare.

Egarran, was part of the positive side of that 3.0 caused by the awesomeness of Häxprocess' ending? Because I think that's a career highlight solo.

More like it just being Opeth. And Famine.

Can't help but think of the Pink Panther's theme whenever I hear the beginning of Folklore

It's a career highlight as is most of the album.
This is in my Top 3 Opeth now.

Omg Pleb yesssss. It is for me too, together with GR and MAYH, closely followed by Morningrise.

Ok this love-in is getting a little uncomfortable for me now, I was happy to just let this settle in as an acceptable Opeth release but top 3? Oh my.

Best rainy day album ever.

I listened to half this album when it came out and stopped. Never looked back since. But people saying it's in the top 3? Either you're fools or this is a misunderstood album. Might have to check it again, but I just don't want to stain my mental portrait of what Opeth looks like further than I already have.

Opeth's current line-up is arguably their strongest to date so I really don't see any problems with people preferring their latest trilogy over the death metal stuff

Well, for me what I really like about it is its sense of adventure. It's the most twisted they've been since Morningrise, the most weird/one-passage-to-the-next/free-form they've been since their second release. I love that sense of looseness.
Plus, reason two: AXE. His performance here is one of my fave in... ever? Or something like that. He's really good here. He's been given the room to play in a loose, jazzy delicious style, and he shows he's made for that.

“More jazz less 70's prog worship please.”
You say that like those two things are mutually exclusive, which couldn’t be further from the truth

Well, clearly they're not mutually... inclusive?
They've been heaping on the prog worship and dismissed almost all of the delish jazzyness we know they're capable of.
