I think you really, really need to love Matt to love that song. The instrumental is still perfect imo but it does have less going for it than most of the rest here and the song doesn't really "go anywhere" instead maintaining the same momentum throughout. I love how that consistency of momentum reinforces the sense of apathy in Matt's lyrics there. Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.

Honestly Lemonworld sounds so much more like a TWFM cut to me

Sorrow and Lemonworld are the top 2 here and both sound a lot like TWFM cuts...hence why TWFM is top National.
Logic.

I can’t argue with that logic honestly
Tho Little Faith and Conversation 16 are my faves

Little Faith is my least fave on this for some reason
Conversation 16 is another 5/5 tune

'Lemonworld is naughty.'
Naughty? I think you may be confusing The National song with well-known website (probably) Melonworld.com.

Bloodbuzz, Sorrow and Conversation are easily top 3 for me, but Lemonworld and England the next tier. Rest of the album holds up well, but those 5 are the keepers

"Little Faith" has maybe my favorite overall instrumental arrangment here, I just love how it unfolds and there are some lovely layers there (the harp! the bass! horns!).
But really every song here is 5/5 for me and each for a unique reason.

The opening one-two punch here is nuts. ‘Terrible Love’ followed by ‘Sorrow’ is an emotional wringer.

Little Faith is one of the only National songs that steps over into 'too much of a dirge' territory - vocal melodies are hard work
|

From a sequencing perspective I like Lemonworld as a follow up from all the energy on Bloodbuzz Ohio. It's also a good lead in to the more subdued Runaway.
Bloodbuzz directly into Runaway wouldn't have flowed quite as well

Agree with this, the track is super well developed but the hooks aren't quite there

Is Runaway considered a black sheep of sorts? No-one ever mentions it. It's always been my favourite from this.

Dudes "Little Faith" has literally some of the best hooks in the whole album idk what you're on about
And yeah the flow of this album is perfect
"Runaway" is also perfect, probably the most individually devastating track here for me
I say the word 'perfect' in reference to this album a lot, don't I?

Runaway has always hit me slightly the wrong way, seems a little twee

Runaway is the only track here that dips slightly below the quality of the rest for me.

I saw an old thread somewhere (reddit, I think) where everyone voted for their favorite National songs and an overall list was compiled from the votes to assess the "Collective Top 50 National Songs" or whatever, and I was *very* shocked to see that 'Bloodbuzz Ohio' was the winner by a decent margin. (Keep in mind, that's among ALL songs, not just ones from 'High Violet'.)
Hell for me 'Bloodbuzz' is like, top-of-the-mid-tier here. 'Sorrow' is my clear winner, followed by 'Terrible Love', 'Conversation 16', and 'Vanderlyle'.

Bloodbuzz is sublime and would probably get my overall vote depending warm I felt towards Brainy or Gospel on the day in question

Bloodbuzz is probably the best "pop song" they've ever written so I understand why it is a popular favorite.
