Used to struggle with this and Black Album (or whichever version I heard of them), as some may recall. But have gotten into them more lately.

No doubt the lack of Cliff affected their sound on here. In spite of that, I'd say this has some of their best lyrics. Also like the way they played with song structures here.

This album was basically the inspiration for Meshuggah's whole career \m/

ok I'll bite, what's wrong with this album according to you johnny (other than no audible bass and pretty bad production)

It's definitely got flaws compared to the two albums preceding it but it's very good. I'd probably have it at a 4.5 if it weren't for like Shortest Straw or something.

"Watchtower ruined Metallica?"

Nah, they just missed the lesson from Watchtower that the bass should perhaps be audible lol

Harvester of Sorrow is still my least favorite, but I know I'm in the minority for that one

eye of the beholder is def worst for me too.

I legit always forget about that song when I jam this. I think pretty much everything other track is a stone cold classic and then I see that song and go “oh yeah…”

"other than no audible bass and pretty bad production"
some absolute car crash songwriting decisions here (t/t esp is an ugly mess), wildly fluctuating energy levels (eye + harvester both suffer from this), occasionally hamfisted lyricism, very unflattering spotlight cast by the emphasis on tech on kirk's ability to write a solo (though he has the occasional zinger)
blackened, first half of one and most of frayed ends would probs have landed it in 2.5ish territory, but ugh factor in lengthy runtime x production woes and it's a doozy :/
