"Dirge for November is about a guy who completed No Nut November

Ok so basically the song starts out with the dude in his house on the last day of November. It's just a little bit before midnight, but he is completely unable to sleep due to his pent up libido. He's getting desperate, but he's determined to pull through.

I'm just gonna interpret this line by line so y'all can clearly see the true meaning of this lyrical and musical mastur- uh, masterpiece:

Lost, here is nowhere

Our guy is in a stupor from his month-long abstinence, unable to think clearly due to the massive amounts of sexual energy coursing through him. He plans to break his streak as soon as midnight passes.

Searching home still; turning past me, all are gone; time is now

As midnight approaches, he looks around to make sure none of his roommates/family/whatever are awake so he doesn't embarrass himself.

At this point we reach the acoustic interlude, which represents the guy preparing to relieve himself once midnight has passed.

The transition into heavy riffage symbolizes the final minute of No Nut November, which concludes with the final riff before the harsh vocals.

The omen showed, took me away

Midnight has passed; the guy is no longer able to contain his desire (omen) and starts furiously masturbating with a Fleshlight.

Preparations are done, this can't last

He is ready to break his streak; he cannot wait any longer

The mere reflection brought disgust

As he goes, he reflects upon his achievement and feels it wasn't worth the immense suffering it put him through

No ordeal to conquer, this firm slit

He has successfully conquered No Nut November, now he only has to conquer his "firm slit" (translated Swedish slang for Fleshlight)

It sheds upon the floor, dripping into a pool

... I don't think I need to explain this one

Grant me sleep, take me under; Like the wings of a dove, folding around; I fade into this tender care

Now that his long-suppressed urges are relieved, he is exhausted and falls into a deep sleep, with is represented by the outro.

In addition to the lyrics, the song's title also alludes to its meaning. Dirge means a song of grief or lamentation; the guy is lamenting the month of misery he put himself through.

So yeah, there ya have it."

In the context of the album, I think Dirge is repeatedly glossed over... Or at least I don't hear as many people talk about it in comparison with the rest of the album.

Hence, underrated.

Statistically it's one of the least played tracks (3rd least popular) on Spotify from the album, however, it has always been more popular than The Funeral Portrait, which I always thought was more beloved among fans. The least popular track on the album being Patterns in the Ivy, understandably.

Dirge is a good song, the intro is so beautifully Opethian, but the bulk of the track itself is a bit one dimensional otherwise, mostly 6/8 open chords ad naseum, into an outro with an abrupt transition that harkens back to the primitive first two records.

Album rules from start to finish

the heavy section is forgettable + structure is definitely A/B/C, but that outro is an album highlight and one of their better clean sections imo. a little simple but impeccably gloomy, pretty easy to play along to too (true for a lot of this)

As a teenager Dirge caved my fucking skull in. I had never heard anything like that before, it was my intro to Opeth and prog-death. It will always hold a special place for that reason, but yeah it's definitely bottom 2 on this album

It's an infamous pasta from the Opeth sub. You know I am not capable of such grand undertakings.

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.
