Hm maybe they just need time to grow. I do really like Afraid of Everyone, just not as much as others here.

Can’t believe I said I preferred the Terrible Love alternate version last week. The original is considerably better.

isn't afraid of everyone about Matt being afraid of becoming a father?

Are the b sides on the extended version of this worth checking out? I’m going to anyway, more wondering how good they are and if I should bump them up my queue.

Duh, someone answered that question above. Sorry — shit memory. I blame kids and lack of sleep.

I only recently checked them out and while I don’t prefer anything on the extended version to any song here, they are still pretty great. Be sure to check out “Think You Can Wait” and “Exile Vilify” which are from this era but aren’t on the extended version - those are basically on par with what’s here, essential National songs.

Thx man checking out Exile right now. I’ll save the b sides for when I’m finished with the discog.

Really like Cherry Tree also. Solid 4 imo.

It takes an ocean not to break — Terrible Love

What makes you think I enjoy being led to the flood? — Runaway

Those two lines sound very linked but not really sure how on initial notice.

There’s a lot of water imagery peppered throughout the album, one of my favorite things about it.

Yep and references to insects with the spiders in Terrible Love and the bees in Bloodbuzz Ohio.

Also, wondering if the spiders mentioned in Secret Meeting are linked to the ones in Terrible Love — he also mentions sharks in Secret Meeting. Could that somehow be linked to the mention of the ocean and flood in the songs I mentioned above?

Hmmm...

Gonna have to start paying attention to possible links between the albums re the lyrics and references.

It could just simply be that Matt justlikes to reuse the same metaphors. A lot of lyricists do.
