Thinking this is more like a 4.5 but I need to spin it a few more times.

'"Goddamn, Conversation 16 is amazing. Anyone know what it’s about?"
Love that song, thought it was a humorous look at domestic tedium?

The eat your brains, I’m evil bit though — honestly not sure what he’s trying to say but maybe it’ll make more sense after a few more listens.

Man, Terrible Love is becoming another favorite. This is definitely my favorite National album so far.

But I won't follow you
Into the rabbit hole
I said I would but then I saw
Your shivered bones
They didn't want me to

The lyrics are really winning me over and pulling me towards that elusive 5.

Ngl I'm sure it's a weird opinion but some of these b-sides are way more moving/immediate than the cuts on the album

The b-sides are amazing too but every song on the proper album is 5/5

Not sure I’ll be able to 5 this tbh. First two songs are amazing and the stretch from Bloodbuzz-conversation is the best section, but it sags a bit in the middle. Not saying they’re bad songs —they’re still good and everything, but the Anyone’s Ghost-Afraid of Everyone is noticeably weaker than the rest of the album imho.
Still — I have it at a 4.5. Obviously I don’t think they’re bad songs. Just pale a bit in comparison.

The b sides are on the expanded version right? Wake Up Your Saints etc? Gonna check them out today.

yessir they're on there
I just find it really hard to get into his vocals but they're a bit more energetic/moving on the b-sides, esp the live ones from the expanded

Give it some time man. I was the exact same. Just felt like he wasn’t very emotional/passionate. Too monotone (loved the screams on Sad Songs though!). But I’m really loving it now. He’s emotional in more unorthodox ways and it takes time to hear that. More subtle.
I think I’m even still adjusting and will grow to love his vocals more.

Afraid of anyone and Anyone's Ghost are among the best songs from the band. Captures the anxiety that makes this album the masterpiece hat it is.
