"If the production wasn't the most annoying thing in all of music, then this would absolutely by far be my favorite Metallica album."
At least you actually acknowledge the production issues! I've been clowned on so much for having problems with certain "classic" albums that I can't stand the production of. And the argument is always "ah well, production doesn't matter that much anyway". Bullshit. Production/mix can absolutely fucking ruin an album for me

"Production/mix can absolutely fucking ruin an album for me"
Agreed hard - unfortunately it's so egregious here for me that it cost it "classic" status, a full point deduction

It's true for some and not for others. All jokes aside i actually do usually give zero fucks about production, and this album is no different

"Ah well, production doesn't matter that much anyway"
Agreed, anyone who lets production effect their score by a full point is a goddamn wacko and shouldn't even be fucking trusted

Production has to be very blatantly awful for me to really care tbh.

I wanna know who decided that all late-80s to early-90s thrash & death metal bands would have razor-thin guitars that are all completely lacking in power or balls

Don't get me wrong, I understand that what I said was a bit hyperbolic. But that sound just does absolutely nothing for me, even in regards to the albums I like
Honestly, I wish more albums from that era sounded like Ride the Lightning or Pleasure to Kill... still raw and intense, while also sounding very "wide" or "panoramic" if that makes sense. it's that dry, isolated sound I don't like

Just like Hawks said. Unless it sounds literally unlistenable I couldn't care less. I just find lots of aesthetic value in areas other than prod, like the fucking riffs

i just assume it was this album's sales numbers that kinda skewed the scene.
