Lemonworld is, lyrically, the defining National song for me. every song before or since I hold up to Lemonworld's standard to see if I'm happy with the lyrics on it. this without saying, of course, that Bryan and both Dessners absolutely kill it with that groove and the production is as outstanding as it is on this whole album. basically, yeah, you're wrong

I don’t want to be that bad person who says if you can’t get into that song you don’t understand The National...

...but, yeah

Who could not love a song with the line “Lay me on the table, put flowers in my mouth, and we can say that we invented a summer lovin’ torture party”?

lemonworld was the first national song i fell in love with yh, but i'm not even sure i'd put it in the top half here anymore

"Finally 4.5ing this. That chorus to Runaway is powerful. Ready to start crying"

Finally falling fully for “Runaway” was the final step in realizing this is my favorite album of all time. It’s a crucial moment here for me. “What makes you think I’m enjoying being led to the flood?” just kills me.

bloodbuzz ohio might be the most overrated national song, don't get the love for that one

I love how close the 'owe-mon-ey to the mon-ey-I-owe' sounds like Old MacDonald 'ee-I-ee-I-oh' - sort of becomes this wordless mantra nursery rhyme to me, a 'hollow triumph' call to arms and dreary all at the same time

I like Bloodbuzz but it’s fairly mid tier for me.

Lemonworld is pretty awesome. Fucking love the atmosphere of it.

And I love Runaway, even if it’s maybe a minute too long.

You know, the first few and the last few songs are stellar, but the middle sags in spots. Not too badly or anything, but stuff like Anyone’s Ghost I’m pretty meh on. But there’s also great stuff like Bloodbuzz, Lemonworld and Runaway in the middle.

I wouldn't be surprised if I end up 5ing it within the year

Exactly! It's the delivery of that line that made it so powerful. Started to hit home a little more.
