Hearing my favorite Converge song Heartless sound so much crisper is just heaven sent to my ears. That ending breakdown is pure insanity

Yeah probably their “heaviest” record Weight of the World, Grim Heart, and Trophy Scars are really the only respite… that’s one thing I’ll give to it, No Heroes is fucking relentless.

Still probably my least favorite Converge record aside from Halo tbh

I see it as a weaker Converge record but it still fucking rips.

Saying that I've got it rated as 4.5 snd I say it is weaker - but past me says different!

Ya bands goated, 99% of other bands put out something this good it would be considered their best album.

I think this album could be more beloved if we get rid of the first 4 tracks, the second half is where is at

It’s looking like it will. We Were Never the Same is definitely moodier but still goes hard. The last 3 tracks all push up against the 5 minute mark which does have me curious to see where they’ll take that. I feel like they don’t have a ton of songs in that mid length area. Like most of their tracks are either 2 minute barnburners or 7-11 minute epics.

Make Me Forget You and Gilded Cage are just shy of 5 minutes, I’m sure one of them will probably be a slower cut. It’s hard to imagine them just making 30 minutes of nothing but pure fury, but I’m absolutely down for whatever the fuck they’re cooking up.

I’m still frothing at the mouth for more tho, it’s gonna be their shortest record by a decent margin and I know for a fact that at one point Ben said they had around 20 songs written so I’m really hoping they record those b sides at some point

@DType I completely agree.

Actually, I have the same exact issue with Jane Doe. I don’t see the first few songs there on the same level than what follows. The only difference for me is that at least with that other album it blows up out of nowhere with “Homewrecker”/“Broken Vow” combo, where this is more streamlined all the way through.

This having a lower rating than The Dusk in Us is frankly absurd

Wanna check in with this and All We Love soon. Haven't spun those ones in a while and want to see how they compare to the new one

yeah I just disagree big time man, Dusk is much better imo. A Single Tear alone is better than anything here, and Arkhipov Calm, I Can Tell You About Pain, Wildlife, Broken By Light, and Cannibals are better as the “heavier” songs imo too.

Idk, I just listened to this all the way through for the first time in a while and I think it’s also Jacob’s worst performance, both lyrically and just vocally in general. He has absolutely zero range aside from Plagues, Lonewolves, and Trophy Scars, which, funny enough, are all among the best tracks on that album. Lyrically it’s just not very good. At least not up to his usual standard

The three I mentioned along with Grim Heart, Orphaned, and To the Lions are the best tracks here, and I know it sounds like I’m being harsh, and I guess I am, but I cannot stress enough that if most other metalcore bands made this I would probably be all over it, I just expect more from these guys.

I mean seriously, if some no name band dropped this as a debut in 06 I would be calling it one of the best albums of the decade lol

I liked TDIU at first but it had very little replay value for me, and just feels a bit too safe imo. Has a few good tracks though

I can definitely understand wanting more range from Bannon on this one, but I just love when he's at his most chaotic. Pretty much any time I find myself thinking "How did a human being make these sounds?", I dig it lol

And I'm probably in the minority because I know he's a well regarded lyricist, but I can't bring myself to care too much about this band's lyrics. They're unintelligible like 80-90% of the time anyway lol

I should add that the longer, slower tracks on TDIU being kind of a snooze is that album's biggest problem imo

That I agree with. Mainly just the title track, on that front Grim Heart is definitely better, it’s far more engaging. I think Thousands of Miles Between Us is a lot better, and that more linear songwriting should’ve been used on the title track. I’ve been saying since the album dropped that The Dusk in Us would be better if they cut the entire second verse and just went straight into the outro, it’s slowly building momentum and all of the music and ambient sounds are swelling up then it all just dissipates and we’re back to dreary square one. It’s like 7 minutes and would be so much better if they chopped it down to like 5.

I don’t hate the song or anything but it definitely could’ve been trimmed up a little, and Jacob proves that he actually can sing on last minute of Thousands of Miles Between Us but still insists on doing that almost spoken word style of clean vocals. That song would be so much better with his more expressive singing voice. Idk why he doesn’t do it more often, maybe he’s shy.

And to be completely fair, I think similarly about Axe to Fall as far as Jacob’s vocals go. That was the era of that inhuman bark you’re talking about, and it does sound cool for a while but it just feels so one note after a while to me. I think his harsh vocals got much better going into AWLWLB and Dusk, through now basically. It’s much more expressive imo. It was a weird little period, because he certainly didn’t sound like this on You Fail Me or Jane Doe.

I get liking them, and I don’t think they’re bad at all or anything, it’s just I think he sounded better before AND after No Heroes + Axe to Fall.

And honestly I don’t think you’re in like the vast minority or anything when it comes to his lyrics. I think most fans go into Converge for the batshit instrumentals and the insane vocals just happen to compliment them very well. I’m also not gonna pretend like I know ALL of the lyrics by heart, like I really didnt remember much of this albums lyrics until I listened to it yesterday, and obviously the actual singing on Grim Heart and the more intelligible shouts on a few other tracks are just easier to understand without looking it up.

I really can’t stress enough how much I love this band tho, I’m not even really shit talking the record or anything I just like it less than most of the rest lol
