"I've cooled a bit on this one.
I still think it's really fun for the most part and has some cool ideas, but it's inevitably bogged down from being in development hell for a while, and lacks the focus and vision of Survival Horror and amo."
yeah very much agree with this. i honestly kinda forgot this dropped at all. lots of cool songs on here but many of them have been out for years

yeah this is a bit of an up and down release, I like it overall but would love more if the level of quality of like, Amen was more present

idk i like them enough to give them high marks even if it isn't like, Andre 3000 levels of masterful wordplay/poetry in Oli's lyrics, i think he's far from his best days as a lyricist admittedly (crucify me/hospital for souls/blessed with a curse/don't go/deathbeds come to mind for peak oli lyricism)

they are horrendous like a teenage girls diary and yes he did used to be a lyricist that tried a little

there's a certain level of earnestness with these like, stream-of-consciousness type of lyrics he does now that even if it makes no sense, it's like, yeah sometimes people's brains don't make sense so i've probably become a lot less critical about "bad" lyrics if they're performed with a lot of conviction and i don't get a very specific vibe from it that rubs me wrong (see: most recent skillet). might explain why like, simple plan, secondhand serenade, and dashboard actually do work for me

i can defs relate to that phenom in other contexts, but this band/album sounds so processed and artifical to me that i find it hard to buy into the idea of sykes earnestly venting that shit as stream-of-consciousness at this point in his life. smacks of spoonfuls being fed to a happy, vulnerable audience to me

fair enough, i can see why this doesn't work for a lot of people, but yeah something about this just scratches the brain right, it's not survival horror but I admire their ability to just embrace things that people who take themselves too seriously would call cringe with open arms.
plus this is probably the closest I'll ever get to loving something influenced by hyperpop
