Yeah, listening now and with Young’s version are you supposed to laugh at the sentiment or is it for real, it’s so melodramatic

Sometimes on ballads Young does get a bit ‘Elmo out of Sesame Street’ for me god bless him, and that’s one.

I still like it but I def see why it’s second worst rated on Harvest on RYM

Secretly it’s one of his best songs probably but I’d take a scalpel to that arrangement.

‘Harvest’ is quite a long way from my favourite Young I have to admit

Harvest wouldn’t make my top 5 Neil albums either

I might be going too far but I’d say I even slightly prefer ‘Harvest Moon’ to ‘Harvest’

Beyond that you’ve got the ditch trilogy, Everybody Knows and Gold Rush, plus Zuma has its moments

"Yeah, listening now and with Young’s version are you supposed to laugh at the sentiment or is it for real, it’s so melodramatic"

i dunno, i far prefer it to the blank affect of the tindersticks version, coupled with that put on mangled vocal delivery and irritating thunk sound / out of place uneccesary guitar lick / annoying intrusive beat, and the inappropriate almost comical ending (ending actually gives me cabaret wino drunkenly covering 'alive and kicking' vibes accompanied by a casio metronome), sorry doof. When young emerges out of the strings to sing "when will i see you again" i get all misty.

I mean if you actively hate the whole shtick of the Tindersticks (Tindershticks?) then you can't judge the cover version really, it exists in their thing ;)

I don't think it's a masterwork (it wouldn't make their top 100 songs or anything) but I like how you can just put it on as background music - and to be honest I feel the intention of the song more directly with it, it plays it straight.

It prob wouldn't make a top 5 Tindersticks cover versions (things like their version of 'If You're Looking For a Way out' are outstanding for example and most certainly 5 star)

yeah, fair point, i've never really loved tindersticks. but beyond that, i think this cover is just a straight up fail in the interpretation stakes, i feel quite the opposite re: conveying the intention. I also would hesitate to say they're playing it straight, there's a deadpan theatricality about it

I've listened to Staples a lot more than Young so maybe I just 'get' most stuff he sings, like he sings it straight for his established personality (which isn't ever 'po-faced depressive' I guess)

Dunno, they're an acquired taste...but then for a song on such a massively popular album the Young original is probably also an acquired taste, like I said I like it but I'd really like to like it a lot more than I do. Maybe needs 20 years in rotation, some songs do for me.

i'd say out of the two heavily arranged tracks on harvest, there's a world (it's the only bad song on harvest for me) is a fail; I like sufjan's reworking. but man needs a maid is the successful implementation of the style. i can get someone being a bit allergic to the almost chocolate box strings but there's something about the performance that manages to transcend it, and i think i love it even more for that reason

the arrangement on 'Maid' doesn't hide the fact we're dealing with an excellent song in itself, so it isn't a disaster

'There's a World' is a little closer to a disaster, true
