"Hold your damn horses. Bashing 'tallica, GnR and Pantera is pretty damn weird way to appreciate this record. Like this band wasn't ass for half a decade(whole if you don't care about the stage)."

Metallica had a banger prime

GnR have always sucked

Pantera are the posterchild for the worst of 5FDP-isms in modern "radio metal"

I get it, that's an opinion. I just don't get what that says about this album.

For me tracs 5-10 are really solid here and that's the sequence I have been coming back to this album. It plays out like a chilling semi psychedelic ep like that.

in my experience simon is the only one on this website who has accurate enough scores to be a paragon for finding good music

this is not just because of the gold cobra 5

---There goes Simon overrating an album again…---

We've all overrated stuff before (except me, I'm obviously a beacon of objectivity), but I think Simon was actually spot on here. This is their best album, or at the very least their most interesting, and I don't think I would have even bothered checking it out if he gave it a middling review because that would have just confirmed my suspicions that this was going to be garbage. The shock of seeing the 4.5 after everyone including myself trashed the singles is the main reason I listened. Now I have an A7X album as a borderline AOTY candidate, which is just about the weirdest feeling ever.

I mean, music is subjective, so saying I’m “overrating” something is a farce. But with how in-line my opinion is with consensus, I don’t think I’ve ever had that many misfires? Recent memory is probably the last Interpol record — which I still maintain is amazing.

But frankly, as a reviewer, you shouldn’t be concerned with that sort of stuff anyway. Did you really think I expected the sputbase to agree with me on this one? It was at a 1.7 avg before I dropped the review and everyone seemed ready to crucify it. You’ve just got to be true to yourself and judge something based on your own tastes, with some level of nous in articulating why it’s good/bad/average. Otherwise you’re just a disingenuous hack looking for validation.

Like proper production and vocal melodies? :P

Polished mainstream rock and metal production has been fucking atrocious for at least half a decade now
And yeah, much as Gonz props up a lot of Kerrangcore bollocks for young adults who never aged past high school, this review is the one. Album is such a whatthefuck that I could see any reaction being justified, but I feel this gives a pretty substantive take on what this album is while leaving space and suggestion for other possible opinions

Galbador is correct. A7X has been derivative of those bands since day one. Metallica's first 4 records >>> A7X's career. GnR is hella overrated but Appetite was a landmark record especially for popular guitar playing, UYI1&2 has Civil War & November Rain, and even Chinese Democracy has some bangers. Pantera kept thrash alive in the 90s practically by themselves, that alone gets respect.

Extra odd to call A7X flat-out better than all of them, considering most of their catalog is borderline stealing from them openly or of middling quality as it is. I love WtF and CoE like many but original or groundbreaking they are not, if anything The Stage and especially THIS record are what truly distinguishes them fully as their own thing, and they wear their influences proudly too, it's just not Metallica, GnR and Pantera as much as usual.

I see the high ratings on here, and I’m just so utterly confused. I got into this band in middle school, I actually pre-ordered Sounding the seventh trumpet in Sam Goody or whatever those stores were called. I loved their first two albums, eventually got into City of Evil, but it has just been complete garbage after that, with each album being worse than the last. This might be some of the worst noise I’ve ever heard come out of my speakers, I just don’t understand some of these high ratings and reviews.
