@manatea I'll finish it when I get the chance, I spent the entire night listening to a bootleg R. Kelly album

this album has made seemingly every publication's top albums of 2022 list, MANY of which in the top 5, yet they only have 38k spotify listeners still... which i find really surprising in contrast to chat pile who have gotten an equal amount of love and are at 115k lol

I think more people would listen to Chat Pile and not love it - more of an acquired taste I think - but it seems like anyone who jams this loves it

I don't think Chat Pile is too inaccessible tbh. Those kind of vox are kinda in-vogue and it's not musically too divergent from what listeners of that genre would be familiar with.

'I think more people would listen to Chat Pile and not love it - more of an acquired taste I think - but it seems like anyone who jams this loves it'
weird, because I would've imagined it to be the other way around
I guess this has a wider sonic palette and therefore could theoretically appeal (at least in part), to many different people with a diverse set of tastes. I'd imagine that the harder 'core-orientated' cuts wouldn't go down very easily with the uninitiated though.
Chat Pile's vox aren't as much of an acquired taste and the sound is more consistent, so if you can digest a couple of tracks you're most of the way there. I suppose the barrier could be the relative lack of melodicism.
tl;dr - if I played a bunch of randomly 'generated' people the entirety of both albums, I would expect the consensus to be that more people like track x or y from this, but that Chat Pile will have possibly attained more fans of the album overall

This has crossover appeal potential (which seems to be reflected by its high reception) but ultimately is still tough to get into for those not as acquainted with/those that don't enjoy this kind of abrasive technicality and harsh vox
Carson is a beast, but if those screams don't do it for ya, it's a hard sell.

yeah, the biggest barrier for getting into pretty much any form of music is the vox I reckon
I just see Chat Pile's being an easier sell to your average listener
(lol, not sure why I didn't just say that, rather than the pointless hypothetical scenario / essay up there) ^

yeah looking at rym god's country has 7k votes (which is more than every dillinger album) and a way higher average while this has 2k and is unbolded. guess that just goes to show how inaccessible even the most accessible mathcore bands are.
still woulda figured they'd be closer in monthly listeners just based on daoboys being around longer, touring far more from what i can tell, having major label quality music videos etc... and i guess just being a mathcore fiend this stuff just feels far more accessible to me personally

It was bolded and then the chart police came in because RYM can't bear the sight of metal on the front page that doesn't have a Fantano stamp of approval
Which is why Noctus piercing that bubble last year is such a massive achievement lol

'Hey when the thought train rolls in, you take it wherever it goes.'
not unlike the Daoboys' approach to song-writing
