i really want to like portal and i love the track curtain but have struggled to get into anything else by them

Yeah Portal can be tough to get into. Maybe give Altars (AUS) a shot at some stage. Their first album in particular is basically Portal, but its approached from an old school angel so its a bit more accessible; bit more riff based and a bit less of Portals weirdoisms. Ascetic Reflection is their newest release which came out this year which is also worth checking out.
