I don't use youtube pretty much ever but if this is a youtube platform compression thing, bands really need to avoid them. Can't have a platform ruining your product
If some label staffer uploaded the wrong version, that's pretty much a fireable gaffe.
The only negative comments I have about the production for the spotify version are:
- rhythm guitars are a little less prominent in the mix than they usually are for this style of music which keeps some of the riffs from hitting quite as hard
- the kick and snare don't hit as hard as on ascendancy
But recording and mixing audio is a game of tradeoffs, and there are a lot of positives:
- some of the baselines are able to breathe much more and cut through the mix which puts a spotline on some pretty cool interplay with the guitars at times
- no ear fatigue
- you can really every drum stroke very clearly including subtle cymbal work
- choruses are consistently powerful
- lead guitars cut through like butter and really shine on the solos
And some of the big moments like in the middle of crisis or the climax of phalanx still land pretty well.

the mix is not very riff-oriented fs.

And heafy’s vocals haven’t improved at all since ascendancy 😬
Harsh vocals that is
|

The vocals have always been the weakest part of the band. A lot of metalcore vocalists only get worse over time though. This register that a lot of them scream in is too full throated compared to doing deeper lows or falsetto based high screams that don’t strain the voice as much

Why the hell is this their highest rated album here. It's basically a forced retread of Shogun.

a forced retread of shogun is what the majority of people have wanted from them the past 15 years

"a forced retread of shogun is what the majority of people have wanted from them the past 15 years"
I mean Ibaraki is more interesting than everything this band's done since imho so yeah.

Shogun should have a 4 tbf

Yeah probably. for me, if Shogun is a 4 this is like a 3, it's a retread with little real progression. it doesn't feel like a more mature effort, it doesn't feel like they've learned that much, i like them better when they're moody and introspective because that feels like a new perspective. this is just the same DnD bullshit, at least on Shogun it felt fresh.

They've had some interesting developments musically, but I get not feeling the lyrics.
Shogun still reigns supreme for me for sure though.

honestly the best part about this album is Alex Bent's stellar as always drumming.

Alex is the person who elevates this past Shogun imo

first time i think i've ever seen that take ngl. idk why i'm in the minority here, this album just feels like a bit of an uninspired retread that just happens to have better drumming to me. it's just... fine.

At least it's not as bad as the previous two

Ibaraki might be more interesting, doesn‘t mean it‘s better than this, especially with the vocals on that album…

Keep in mind that I never grew up with Trivium's early work, but to me, their three albums with Alex pretty much decimate the entire rest of their discography. Idk what it is about Alex's work, but it seems as though the band have become so much more progressive and amped up since then. The whole thing is like Shogun or Ascendancy on steroids, and I fucking love it

I don't think the mix itself is that bad, but I hate this drum sound and that guitar tone especially. Wilbur is a good producer, so I'd say it's probably Heafy calling the shots.
|
| |
the production is okay balance wise the problem is that the individual instruments sound very boxy. drums are pretty tone-less, the guitars too dry and flat. wilbur's mixing sounded pretty alright on silence in the snow so i agree it is probably a heafy problem

i like the previous two more than this. they had a better balance lyrically and didn't feel as stale.
