So pretty much any band that has an original sound is false prog and Dream Theater is real prog?

if you're determined to think through the filter of longstanding sput mythos, yes (but also no)

think of it like cheese, the nacho-y yellow processed kind is fake but it still works in some situations

The only Trve prog is 70's Prog. Rush and King Crimson are the truest of Prog.

I'd honestly take most faux prog over trve prog these days.
Both of my parents are progheads, so I grew up with the stuff. I love it, most of it is timeless, and I have loads of nostalgia for the 70s stuff, but sometimes it's refreshing to hear modern takes on the style and approach. That's necessary after hearing Brain Salad Surgery, Moving Pictures, and Close to the Edge for most of your childhood. Taking the piss I am assuming, but BTBAM, TMV and bands like Mew are anything but derivative. Post 2011 Opeth on the other hand....

Rush are the goats, but I prefer faux prog for the most part.

if hot topic customers like it its not prog

If anything new Opeth are the most faux prog of all....though maybe I'm just salty because their older material is so much better.

I'll admit that I'm still salty 10 years later. It sucked getting into them right after Watershed, being so fucking hyped for a new album for three years, only for them to basically become a different band. They don't owe me shit, but still, the pain endures.

"think of it like cheese, the nacho-y yellow processed kind is fake but it still works in some situations"
also a cheaper option than the raw milk gruyere that the farm/vineyard hybrid market down the street is selling

I'm loling because this essentially happened to me too. Though I got to see them at the Royal Albert Hall at the 10th anniversary of Blackwater Park so that was really sweet.
