this and Blackwater Park, man. that´s all I need. Oh, and Damnation.
their early stuff just bugs me. the songs just keep...on...going...with hardly any recurrences of any kind of theme, besides being prog metuhl
|
| |
Doesn't need a theme to be amazing

songs that just keep on going without any riffs, motifs, etc. holding them together don´t fit my definition of "amazing"

I see their beginnings as definitely a mixed bag...but it's a great mixed bag of so many damn good riffs and transitions that just own so hard time passes too easily

I didn´t say "songs that just keep on going without any riffs," I said "songs that just keep on going without any riffs, motifs, etc. holding them together," meaning there are riffs, of course, some of them awesome, but none of them make the song they´re in any more than a long, aimless collection of cool riffs.

This and blackwater park are my favorite opeth albums.

Because they´re quite obviously the best.

"long, aimless collection of cool riffs."
Or you can see it as a progression

Some people prefer Morningrise or My arms Your Hearse.

BWP and Morningrise are equal for me, am not sure which my fave is

But does that not help it sound fresh? Adhering to the same old opening verse chorus solo verse chorus whatever formula can be seen as being kinda stale sometimes. It's refreshing when it's just something new every time. Which is what makes their first 2 releases so amazing. Sometimes I throw on Orchid or Morningrise and think "oh yea that part! sweet!", like it's always a nice surprise. Instead of taking one sweet riff and making it an anchor, just flow with it.
The standard song writing formula is all well and good but I have a feeling they just laid it all out on the table in one go. Too many ideas to fathom so they were like yo lets just riff the shit out of the first 2 albums and then we'll have a solid idea of where to go.

^ Alright, fair enough, man. That´s definitely the best response someone´s ever given me to my
complaints of their early stuff haha
