definitely one of their worst, might've been because of the whole Diego (keyboardist) situation

Definitely one of their best. Might have been the whole Covid situation.

Good thing is they seem to get away from the br00tal approach

Idk man, this band's entire schtick is really wearing off me these days. I still enjoy Aquarius a lot for nostalgic reasons, but Haken's songwriting approach is so damn jumbled and even annoying after a while. Basically the whole "riff salad" concept to the nth degree, which is my least favorite kind of prog metal

Interesting, I find Haken to be the consensus band of modern prog most proggies can agree on - not very original or anything with a strong identity, but well written music. And by being that they're quite diverse imo, even though I don't really connect with their music at all.

I don't know if Haken even have a specific schtick tbh

I don't think they have a schtick, they're more a Dream Thearter-inspired/esque prog metal band that makes quality concept albums.

Kinda lost interest in the band after Affinity came out, though idk why since they still make great music

It's interesting that people are saying that Haken doesn't have an identity or that their stuff is all over the place. If you put this band up next to their contemporaries (which at this point would be bands like DT, Symphony X... I guess) I could easily pick them out of the line-up because they have the ability to balance light and heavy, serious and kitsch with a smile and wink. I find that after listening to their music it's incredibly tight, especially once you get after Visions. Motifs naturally progress and morph and they don't get lost in unnecessary wank-fests like Dream Theater. I appreciate that each of their albums has an identity, so that if you don't like one because its a little lighter (Affinity) you might like something a little heavier (Vector/Virus).

But again, they've become easily one of my favorite bands if not progressive bands in the past ten years so... I'm highly biased.

their contemporaries are bands like leprous though

Thing is, with quite a few of Haken's songs I can go "yea! that's Gentle Giant (Cockroach King), yea, that's Leprous (A Cell Divides), yea, that pretty much like Sigur Ros (Bound by Gravity)

I don't think they don't have an identity though, just that it is a rather weak one. What I really like about Haken is their ability to be serious and silly and sometimes at the same time. That's fun. But sadly I don't get enough out of their music.

Listened to this again today. Grew to a 4! Still not a fan of the opener as a song, though some riffz are cool

But even Leprous doesn't sound like "Leprous" anymore so does that mean they don't have an identity either? With the exception of Bilateral nothing Leprous has done sounds like Haken or vice versa... They're contemporaries in the sense that their music is lumped into the "progressive" category but that's it at this point.

Leprous had a sudden change from Bilateral to Coal, but honestly, their change from that was very gradual. And idk, Leprous feel very distinct imo and Haken don't

gotta agree with kalkwiese, haken is more traditional prog rock/metal but I love do them regardless. I also like contemporary prog rock bands like caligula's horse and riverside even if those might even be more "generic" sounding than haken even.

I never considered C-Horse to be generic tbh, but I guess I can see where that is coming from. Need to meditate about that now

Dude, I want to like Caligula's Horse sooooo bad but their last album just fell flat. Never been able to get into Riverside either.

Also, if you like Haken but maybe wish it was a bit less... Haken-y you should check out Charlie Griffiths' new project. One of my favorite prog releases of the year.
