@josh el-p's production chops will always be admirable and they serve their purpose for rtj well. extremely bombastic. but i'll always prefer his more restrained work and do hope that he returns to his roots for a project or two outside of this. his production from around c4c onwards has gained a lot of scale and opulence but in that process it has lost a lot of the introverted, evocative properties of his earlier stuff. like rtj stuff might be hyphie as all fuck but there is some old el-p stuff that genuinely has brought a tear to my eye, which is an entirely different ballgame, and something that i personally find a lot more impactful and commendable than being able to phone it in on sheer energy alone.
plus, at the time, i think what he was doing with his early solo material, cannibal ox, and company flow, was some of the most innovative and forward thinking material in the game. and it still holds up to that to this day. I don't find his rtj material to be terribly cutting-edge.

just found this soundoff:
"It's time to admit that RTJ is up there with Outkast, Tribe, Wu-Tang, etc. as one of the greatest rap groups of all time"
hhahahahahahaha. Sputnik is just as retarded as I left it.

I'm not a big hip hop guy, and I remember trying to go into El's solo stuff from years past, and the little I listened to had me thinking "well this is weird". So I guess I fit the "only white guys listen to RTJ" stereotype.
Give me a couple El songs that highlight what you're talking about.

T.O.J. and The Overly Dramatic Truth immediately come to mind.

i was just about to rec the latter. you lost me with the vonnegut comment, but won me back here, as always.

why, I've never been in this genre, only on the periphery. I like The Pharcyde and ATCQ and then a few thigns here and there in my generation.

is that a contentious view among the indie hipster elite?
It was always my favorite, anyway.

probably not. my takes are pretty lukewarm these days, ngl.

haha sorry honestly i have some weird personal associations with vonnegut, it might just be one of those things that was ruined for me by personal circumstance and not actually all that indicative of how i would feel otherwise.
