"Criminal Energy is prob my least fav here. Just bland and repetitive imo."
can see that, though i've been always a sucker for straight-forward poppy rock songs. that's why i've been enjoyinh that track a lot.

All the Way (Stay) through Congratulations is one of Jimmy's best run of songs

Agreed with Atari. Also worth mentioning that Diamond has grown like crazy into possibly my 3rd or 4th favorite of the album.

That key change is my favourite moment on the album!

Love the lyrics on "Diamond." "Recommit" has been the biggest grower for me.

Yeah Recommit has been one of my favorites since first listen. That, Congratulations and Delivery were immediate for me. Diamond somewhat as well. Rest of the songs have been growers for me.

Don't love the upwards key change in Diamond. Absolutely love the return downwards key change into the final chorus though so it makes up for it. Downward key changes always feel so much more satisfying to me than upwards ones, but they're quite rare (except in cases like this where it's a return to normal).

I don't think any song here hits the high points of Invented (though All the Way and the opener come close) but it's so consistently great that we miiiight have a 4.5 here. I can't stop listening to this

555 is garbage and Diamond is pretty bad. The rest was okay.

The video for '555' helped me warm up to it because it complements its weirdness well. (2)

What I would think Bleed American would sound like done by a more mature band. Brilliant!

After a few listens I still prefer Bilmuri- Wet Milk over this, for my 2019 fix of modern day radio friendly pop rock.

I have to be honest, this album has made me appreciate Integrity Blues all the more. I do very much enjoy this but I don't think it's on the level of IB.

I actually prefer this a little, but IB is solid.

I think the songwriting on this is up there with IB. But the production is so stripped back... it's like for a lot of the sections they recorded just one guitar part and called it a day, where on IB they might have added subtle synth or piano flourishes to fill out the soundstage a little more. This is missing that richness and fullness a lot of the time that for me gave IB a warmth and atmosphere that draws me into the album's journey. This album doesn't really take me into any kind of mood or mindset... it's just 10 good songs. And I wish it was a little more than that I guess. But it's not like their other albums don't already exist to serve those purposes.

To put it more concisely... I very much agree with the drawbacks Sowing described in the review.

"Delivery" and "555" aside, I agree that there's a lack of warmth/richness in the production and overall sound. Still prefer this to IB, though.

... congratulations is a standout on the record.. it may also help that I'm an AFI fan boy, but it is still an incredible closer
|

Yea "Congratulations" was a real strong and memorable closer for me. Genuinely didn't expect them to close out the record with that much confidence lol
