I agree with that now days tbh, there is a lot of stuff out there that is discordant for the sake of being discordant, especially of the fusion-ass-bullshit variety, and I don’t have the energy to pretend that it’s interesting enough to warrant how grating it is. Star People, for instance, is a fucking unlistenable album and I had to make sure it wasn’t on tec’s silly little list lest there be blood

yeah I can't speak to what an artist's actual intent or creative process is because I'm not them but a lot of dissonant fusion-style jazz sounds to me like it could be created by picking up an instrument and just doing literally anything. and that does not appeal to me

I barely remember STAR PEOPLE tbh; gave it a 5/10 though so my feelings were not very strong on it one way or another. Yet it's still my highest rated Davis album from the 80s, which is saying....something.

There is something to be said for knowing exactly which notes not to play and when not to play them and then playing all of them at the perfectly wrong time anyways, but it’s not “wow I am having an enjoyable experience”

Colton needs some Ornette Coleman in his life.

I can live with "John Zorn (mostly) sucks" as long as it comes with the caveat "but Naked City is a masterpiece".

Masada is definitely top-drawer Zorn and probably his best project

colton i think u shouldnt shy away from jazz, most of it is really not particularly dissonant especially if u stick to 40s and 50s stuff
