Anathema uses a cheese dagger whereas Dr Devy uses a cheese bazooka

why the fuck are we comparing Devy and Anathema when they're like polar opposites

"It's pretty apparent he's the best vocalist of the past 25 years but okay"
He's an amazing vocalist but the fanboy behind that statement yeesh.

I mean, have you seen my av? Lol but it's really not that outrageous a thing to say. How many others can you name that have come close to the breadth his voice has covered? Kyo? Patron? (who I personally think is overrated)

Cover looks like it came from a prog album released in 1998

Regardless of vocalist you pick the statement sits wrong with me since to me it discredits the individuality of so many different singers and the approaches they do. I can say I have my favorite or favorites but I can't in my heart of hearts say I could pick a 'best singer'. In terms of the conversation of the collective best, I wouldn't knock Devy being in that discussion though.

Fair enough Calc, if I'm honest after listening to everything he's ever done I genuinely can't think of a close second so my original comment was even scaled back, but I appreciate not everyone is in the same boat

If that's the case you do you friendo, I can see why. He takes care of his voice, can do both booming operatic cleans whilst doing wild screams...a 'total package'

Patton >>>> [2]
Also, like almost every classical singer is better than Townshend but the comparation is unfair so whatever.

But they aren't though are they? As none of them could sing Bring on the Young, or Storm or Thalamus or Deconstruction or Funeral etc. Let alone all of those songs AS WELL AS the operatic stuff, with zero training

"almost every classical singer is better than Townshend"
Better? How?

Jeff Buckley>>>>
There’s a clip of him doing Cannibal Corpse out there somewhere too so one can only imagine if he ditched folk/alternative and did death metal before he died

Ah yes how could I forget, Buckley was superb but not >>>>
If you ever find that clip I need that in my life, doesn't seem to be on YT

"Better? How?"
They're better technically speaking, but I called the comparation unfair because Townsend and classical singers do, well, very different techniques.

Of course they couldn't, that isn't their style, in the same way Townsend couldn't sing a Bach cantata to save his life so...

Gave this a listen today and it wasn't bad, but it went through one ear and out the other

MASSIVE generalisation because, for instance, Labrie is classically trained and I'd venture that Townsend has always been a better vocalist than Labrie.
The fact that, as you admit, classical singers would be completely shit at doing what Devy does is exactly the point. They're not better than he is, they're merely better than he (presumably) is at singing classical music.
It's not an unfair comparison. It's an irrelevant one.

Alright. Just a thing: I never said "classically trained" singers, I just said "classical" singers, as in people who actually dedicate their life to sing classical compositions, not just people who had a classical training; there's a difference. I'd explain why I said "unfair" but honestly I have no reason to do so, discussing this more would be pointless.
And uh, I know I shouldn't say more, but that "(presumably)" is pretty funny, I thought that even you would know that Townsend can't sing classical music. But whatever.

"I thought that even you would know that Townsend can't sing classical music."
Except it wouldn't be knowledge. It would be conjecture. Without evidence of fact, one way or the other, there is no knowledge. Just two guys shooting the pointless shit on a website.
