New Frances Quinlan album out today.
Weird how I have very little interest in hearing it because it's labeled as Frances Quinlan (featuring all the members of Hop Along) rather than just Hop Along.Rather irrational on my part, but I don't see that changing

it's kind of back-loaded but it's pretty nice, tbh.

Anyone else really enjoying Frances's solo album? It's getting pretty lukewarm scores but I'm getting a lot out of it. Granted it could just be that I'm wired to have an emotional response to anything that woman sings but the songwriting seems on par with a lot of this to me and the arrangements are pretty strong too. Only song I'm having trouble with is the "Carry the Zero" cover. To be fair the original is one of the most perfect indie rock songs ever so any cover is going to fall short but her take on it is a bit awkward/disjointed, apparently she's done an acoustic version of it live so I don't know why she felt the need to do the more electronic arrangement here because I feel an acoustic one would have suited her much better.

Went to LA and Your Reply are damn fine tracks but felt the rest of the album was just ok
part of it could be the high expectations that come with the first Frances Quinlan solo release. I just can't shake the thought that she's capable of much better with the exception of the standout tracks

@luci I have no nostalgia or preconception of what either song is, I just find her version more engaging on first listen

Having heard both versions of the song just now for the first time, I can't say one is better than the other. They're too different, carry completely different vibes and rhythms. I would listen to both for different reasons. Both are like 5/5s for me though, really fantastic.

The original is THE quintessential indie rock song, it’s untouchable. Her version is an interesting take on it but it’s a bit too obtuse; it really doesn’t even compare.
