Sometimes an album is just a bit disappointing and I'm sad.

Ranked/Rated:

1. The Alien [3.5/5] (this has grown on me, it sounds like a decent Half Moon Run song more than anything. His vocals at their most folky are when they're at their best imo. Finally - I WILL ACTUALLY DOWNLOAD THIS SONG, A VICTORY OF SORTS).

2. The Moth [3/5] (the big rock number, but this band are too polished to rock, just like Smashing Pumpkins actually rock but Silversun Pickups can't ever actually rock. Am I saying this song's a pussycat? Yeah, it's nice enough, but it's claws are just blunt. Band of Horse-y melodies are ok.)

3. My Groceries [3/5] (it's the lighters in the air number, it's crying out for a more arresting melody and in particular vocal melodies. Quiet/Loud dynamic is a bit 'on the nose' and in general is overused throughout the album. It's like they just flick a default setting of 'anthemic guitar noise'. The instrumental final minute is v good though).

4. The Gold [3/5] (honestly if you told me this was a Band of Horses comeback song I'd think it was ok but would sniff 'they're still too cheesy right now'. It sounds like Band of horses at their most cheesy, not a terrible thing).

5. The Silence [3/5] (good vocal melodies on this, and almost understated. I get a bit bored by the end, sorry).

6. Lead, SD [2.5/5] (find this one a bit more grating but it is quite catchy I'll concede).

7. Sunshine [2.5/5] (it's sorta sweet, I'm quite impressed they don't drag this into total overly saccharine hell but meh, not a lot more to say).

8. REST OF ALBUM [2/5] (honestly the rest leaves zero impression on me after four full listens and some individual track listens).

As with new Fleet Foxes I dig the massive, dark and enveloping production, however in this case I find the songs themselves quite a bit weaker and more simplistic than the textures that encase them

This singer just riffs around one vocal melody and does it to death...so by the end of the song you're sick of that melody

No love for The Wolf from you, Doof? That's far and a way the best song here, imo.

Doesn't do anything for me despite being one of the most bombastic tunes. I don't really like the 'tape noise/voices' in the background they use here and on other songs either. Not sure about the drums on this one too.

You can have a go at me all you like but I've given this a fairer chance than most other users would for something that's not entirely their thing.

I dunno, think I'm behaving like a fucking gent and I've just given myself a huge pat on the back for it. Bravo Doof.

There are users on this site who probably think 'American Football' is a great bandname :/

Sucks. So does Manchester Orchestra (shit to pronounce, meaningless, Manchester has loads of totally unrepresentative musical associations that just makes it feel clumsy).

Doof doing the Lord's work. I couldn't rate half the record either, in one ear and out the other (mostly cause of the repetitive vocal melodies). At this point if you want help with your objectivity rating just look at what Rowan rated 4.7 or 4.9 or whatever. You're down to 99%, i recommend the latest smith street band ;)

do I spy some genuine doof anger on the previous page there? uh oh we've awakened the dragon folks better back pedal

doof we all greatly appreciate your continual hot takes, your odysseys from not caring about _insert album of 2017 that people like_ to caring about it marginally more, and your thrice daily updates of opinion that we all desperately needed to know. the site wouldn't the same without it all really

I don't think this is the best starting place, tbt. And not because of my rating. Really anything from Virgin to Simple Math would be a better starting point, imo.
