I listened to some samples from every album and that seemed to be the most promising, even compared to this. I just started here to get aboard the hype train.

Tbh I'm a little bit surprised but at the same time it makes sense. This seems like one of their most melodic and structured albums to date which, as someone earlier in the thread said, makes it a great Mastodon gateway album.

I used to listen to a solid amount of metal as a teen and early 20'er, but began to find relaxing music more appealing with age. This bucks the trend, but I don't think it signifies a new era of diving back into heavy shit. Saving that for my midlife crisis anyway ; )

It is very accesible for non metal fans, that's for sure.

This is quality.

Show yourself is great, don't understand the hate. Catchy as hell.

Perfect combination of early and later year Mastodon. Show Yourself feels out of place, but aside from that the rest is quality stuff.

It definitely has a bit of everything from their catalogue, and it clicks together so brilliantly. I'd rate it as highly as Blood Mountain or Leviathan.

But here's a question I feel is worth asking in general: Down the line, will this be seen as a classic or one of the best Mastodon albums?

@Raven: I guess people only turned their noses at it because of the radio friendly vibe to it. But agreed, nothing intrinsically wrong with it and one of the most memorable.

If I were trying to get someone into metal this is probably one of the albums I'd tell them to check out

it's somewhere between a 3.5 and a 3 for me, which is what I expected to be honest. It's pretty good!

why is this song so universally disliked ? from reviews to various music forums, the song is always mentioned as the weak link of the album

probably because it's on the poppier side, apparently that's illegal when it comes to metal

I'm all for catchy poppy goodness, but Show Yourself is just really fucking lame

"probably because it's on the poppier side, apparently that's illegal when it comes to metal"

that's weird cause as far as i can recall, everyone loved Curl of the Burl when it was first released, even though it was almost pop-metal for mastodon's standards

well I've only bothered with this and the last album when it comes to Mastodon so I'm not particularly well-versed on these guys.

It starts and ends too abruptly, that's my problem. It's not a bad song, it just feels out of place and a bit half baked.
