i love the noir elements to this so much - i would call it parisian based on The Aristocats but there's something ineffable joyous about a group of musicians puffing gaspers as the clock strikes midnight and the final act is just "hmm how intense can we make this sound while still making people smile" and the answer is: very and yeah spectacular

From the album's liner notes:

"Critics, they sing, dance, play the piano, bass, drums, saxes, and most of the oral instruments. I even know one who can hear. I mean he can actually hear the difference between a major triad and A minor. He can also take old chords off old records recorded in 1902 by Jelly Roll Morton. After this accomplishment for many years now he also knows that every musician who improvises copies Louis Armstrong. And this man works while musicians who just play music are scuffling to pay rent or have their wives bury them in dirt with the few dollars insurance the American Federation of Musicians calls insurance. "

This is gold. And it keeps going on about music reviewers and it just cracks me up because how wonderfully asynchronic the whole excerpt is. You can read it all here:

I should probably delve deeper into jazz, this is one of the few classics I've actually heard. His discog looks intimidating but I did also manage to check 'Mingus Mingus' and Mingus Ah Um.

I was on Ah um (pretty good)....this def goes to my palate more, since its challenging has fuck...this is the kind of jazz that wouldn't work in an elevator...therefore, my kind of jazz.

The avg on this is .01 higher than Kind of Blue according to the Sput charts and that makes me sad
