aura's definitely saor's peak. forgotten paths doesn't stand up to it at all - each of the tracks have like half their runtime of actual ideas and for such a short record it's really unforgivable. it's hidden in a lot of blazing fast black metal and flutes but songwriting wise it is really stale where aura was constantly shifting and changing it up.

Saw some neckbeard with his mom at the store wearing a Saor shirt, i wouldve talked to him if she wasnt there. Missed opportunity.

I love the melodies on Forgotten Paths, but the song-writing is a little more simplistic, aye. Aura is probably his peak.

I really enjoy the piano in Monadh and the female vocals on Bròn but FP does feel a little anticlimactic.

i find forgotten paths really saccharine in comparison to aura which feels a lot more deliberate and full of energy
i tried listening to this again the other night and i might lower my rating - i find some of the whistles and strings really overbearing, like the more i listen the more i realise sometimes they take away rather than add

Yeah that’s why I listen to this guy, then again I’m not exactly a BM truther.

as a classical keyboardist, I don't find guitar riffs very exciting and am drawn the folksy flutey stringsy bm like this, Can Bardd, Skyforest, Sojourner, and others where the melodies and harmonies are often carried by orchestral instruments (or keys). just a different appreciation I guess.

it's all about riffs for me
like um, when neige comes in on the climax of the t/t of forgotten paths, it'd honestly just be better if the guitar riff spoke for itself rather than totally bogging it down with the shrill whistles and strings overcomplicating the mix. it just makes it so saccharine and messy. frustrating as fuck cus it's a good riff and melody and really doesn't need the extra fluff.

Yeah, that's a great way to describe it. Do you know any other albums in that vein? (other than Panopticon's stuff ofc)

Vehemence - Par Le Sang Verse, Enisum - Arpitanian Lands, and Chthonic - Bu-Tik come to mind. Gospel - The Moon has that feeling, though in post-hardcore. actually Gris - L'ame Enflammee might be the closest, even though they play a more somber brand of black metal.

Only made it through the Gris album so far but it was a great rec! The drumming is definitely bold in places and the strings really seal the deal.

Il était une foret is one of my favourite black metal albums ever. I lol'd when I tried to buy it on bandcamp, and saw that the digital version costs 999 euros (it still does).
