This thing is soul-crushingly devastating and beautiful. Probably my AOTY, with Blackstar and Total Depravity not far behind.

Are his previous albums similar to this or not comparable at all?

You can really only even tell it's the same artist thanks to Cave's voice. Aside from Push the Sky Away, the other records might be on a different planet from this (and frequently from each other)

I think I may need an increase in my prozac prescription after listening through this. Odd to think something as phenomenal as this could also be just as devastating to the soul. Fuck.

"i had such hard blues down there in the supermarket queues" and "you're an african doctor harvesting tear ducts" sung so solemnly and sincerely in delivery makes me giggle tho

Idk I have to agree with Piglet on this one, some of the lyrics are a little overbearingly trying to be metaphorical or profound that they end up sounding a bit silly.

It's the "such hard blues" part that kind of kills the line - I understand what he's going for but that choice of phrasing just sounds so contrived.

Like if someone asked you how you were doing and you said "I have such hard blues right now" they would just laugh.

yeah i get the imagery but the delivery makes the turnover of the lines a little awkward and silly sounding with a cynical pair of ears
"Such hard blues" just doesn't pair with "supermarket queues" in the way nick cave would've wanted, if he cared enough. And of course the fact that he doesn't is a charm in itself

It's so strange how most of these songs were already written before Arthur's death.
Everything about them feels a direct cataclysmic reaction. Which of course comes through in the raw coarseness of the recordings, but the fact that lines like
You feel from the sky
Crash landed in a field
Near the River Adur
existed beforehand

the only line that I think is funny here is "it was the year I officially became the bride of Jesus" because you can tell he just had a sneer on his face singing it

I know at least the River Adur line (and all of Jesus Alone, from what it sounded like) were written beforehand - mentioned in the doc about Susie thinking the lyrics felt like bad omens that Nick marked down as stemming from her predilection towards superstition
