I think it's interesting that you spend so much time talking about how damaging it is for female artists to have a male artist in their song, and then mention how effective all her male collaborations are (only mentioning females when they are portrayed as an image). It kinda diminishes the message you're trying to get across. In addition, you also mention she does a great job of avoiding the pitfalls, but then in the same paragraph talk about how the male's message is so important because he talks about politics and the current state of race in America, while Beyonce just calls her lover back to bed.

I'm sure this was a hard review to write. As you said, you are not an black woman. However, there seem to a few subconscious word choices within your review that detract from what you're trying to say.

@davidwave4: Quite an interesting perspective you have here. I am not sure the political and social themes alone are enough to support the musical value of the album, and you did very little to link both aspects, but this review is very well-written and brings up many interesting points. Great job, pos'd.

@Zettel Thanks for the love. I really liked your review too. I don't exactly agree with the conclusion, but it's still well written and I can clearly see your thought processes. To be honest, it's good to see someone not talking too much about the racial aspects (lord knows we don't need another flame war on here).

the funny part is the flame war on this thread wasn't even about race, it was just about everyone telling Snide to shut up

back to beyoncé tho, i think what's so distressing about focusing so much on gender and race in reviews about minorities is that they get swept up in whatever the reviewer wants to talk about, be it racial discrimination or gender disparity.

take for example, brostep's review of the last ariana grande album. she made a few songs about loving a boy and feeling sad that they broke up, and somehow it got turned into ariana not being a feminist and supporting the patriarchy or whatever, like chill, dear lord how she dare feel any ~misogynistic emotions~
