i'm sure she never intended any of that, but it would be cool if she did.

it would also be interesting if she was just making catchy pop music and there was nothing deeper than that

^ Idk, I kinda doubt that. Maybe she didn't necessarily intend specifically what plane noted but something along those lines, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some societal themes or something like that in there.

that's what i suspect she was doing, key. and i'm totally fine with that. it doesn't mean that we can't extract a deeper meaning from it ourselves, even if it was never the intention, but this seems like grimes making the kind of music she really wants to, and it just so happens to be really poppy.

bringing up a different argument here: i hate that 'pop' carries such a negative connotation with it. it shouldn't, but many people perceive artists like grimes, who embrace a poppier sound, to be 'sell-outs' and that shit really grinds my gears. i've already seen so many people attack this just because of the genre it falls under, which is such a useless criteria to have

Yeah, I don't really care for all the "controversy" and shit.

If there's nothing more to it I don't care, if there is that's fine and I'd be interested to hear it.

perfect example is the backlash to Go, that shit was embarrassing. another less relevant example is Mastodon's The Hunter

people can't seem to accept that an artist may actually want to explore a more streamlined sound, and are by no means trying to procure more sales. the fact that the music is well written and sounds good af is also overlooked

Haha I'm still unsure of where to rank this, felt like a 3.5 on my first go around but I can see this as a grower for sure.

i love the line on butterfly:

"don't know this song/sweeter than a sugar cane"

feels so self aware, pure delight in it's identity and playfulness. makes me feel happy

this review is coming btw.

'I also recognize how very little I am on this site and now only pop in on the select hyped artist and whatnot, and a quick search through the front page reviews brings so much insight many artists, lots of good writing and critical thinking and whatnot, but: there is still time and effort you are putting into talking about this (generally, not just Grimes), and that time could be better spent doing more than saying "would rather be listening to ____" or the tangent into your driving habits. Just saying. Music community. Down with ratings, etc.'

Did anyone else read this in the voice of Buzz Killington from Family Guy then hear Peter Griffin go 'aaaaaaaaaahhh'?

"I think my music used to be more escapist. Visions didn’t really acknowledge reality, but this record is more about looking reality in the face."

yeah i really picked up on that. visions pushed aside a lot of emotion and subdued feelings and focused on being really spacey and atmospheric

@plane: Interesting points - that would probably be an interesting conversation but you'd need something to go from like the angle you presented and have willing participants for such a conversation.

"Grimes and this site have become a scapegoat for larger issues plaguing my ties to music and criticism. Honestly sorry I showed up."

Not sure what specifically you're getting at here. And why are you apologizing?

unfortunately I don't think sputnik has ever been the place (at least not since I've been here) to talk about those kinds of things
