This is the exact point I'm trying to make. It's not that they were ever not metal enough or some shit, in my opinion. I feel like they took criticism from people who did say that and it negatively impacted their songwriting and style on this album.
Anyway I'm going to let it go since no one seems to really get what I mean. Fact of the matter is this album blows.

I don't even hate the songwriting so much as the little problems here or there that make it obvious the whole thing was rushed. Kind of hard to appreciate a song when a random out-of-tune guitar fill riff pops out of nowhere to scream in your face.

It's very clear they were trying to produce some awe inspiring moments but so much of it feels out of place and rushed together. If they'd spent another few months working on this then who knows, maybe it'd be as good as Sunbather.

To each his own, but I still think Judah is their best lol. This album had its moments, but most of the songwriting was just bland compared to Judah and Sunbather.

Judah is good, but I hopped on the wagon late and never gave it the attention it probably deserves. I first heard these guys right when Sunbather came out and downloaded Judah later.
I agree this was rushed and suffers with some serious flaws, but there is some killer shit here. Where'd the hate for Gifts come from over the last few pages? I think it's one of the best composed songs here.

Sunbather is a great album and Roads is pretty good too. I only hate this album because of its wasted potential. It could have been so much better - Zar is correct on the rushing comments as well, for sure.
