One of the best things about the band is how they're able to take a solid foundational sound that they essentially invented and tell completely different stories by exploring different facets of it without ever straying too far from the source. It's really masterful manipulation of a trademark sound they have complete control over; unfortunately, with the greatest of respect, a lot of that nuance seems to have been lost on you

"you can't hear the difference between the vernal, folk-y woodland shoegaze of Souvenirs and the dark, moonlit post-black metal sea that is Ecailles?"
i can, but they don't necessarily provoke a different mood for me (big part of what makes the atmosphere what it is). not every difference changes the atmosphere. in the grand scheme of things these nuances are so slight it doesn't necessarily make me feel anything different
it's not even that the nuances are too small, something about alcest is just so... watered down that it fails to make me have any strong feelings which may cause me to fail to realize the differences in atmosphere. but the base is absolutely the same in most of their albums
