I want to like this album more but every time he starts rapping really well he cuts himself off to stop for a joke or insert something random. Dude can rap, but he just cuts it with these off kilter experimental vibes that I just can't dig.

are you sure you arent listening to Camp? because he stays pretty serious in this album

I mean in Camp it was a lot of jokes and one liners. This one he has them here and there. But seriously whenever he really gets into it, he stops shortly after. It annoys me especially because that'll only be like a part or two of the song.

give me an example aha. because I can only think of 3005 and Sweatpants as possible examples of that. tracks like No Exit and Life stay pretty on point imo

World Star- @1:49 cuts off then it's just weak followed by the voicemail and this weird instrumental session that just doesn't do it for me. It's not interesting to me and throws off the whole song.

Yeah, right before that cuts him off he's starting to really bring it. It feels like some awkward excuse he couldn't keep it going after that.

or maybe it was done on purpose? I'm pretty sure he could've kept going and kept it as a run of the mill rap banger but the switch up is what makes the song interesting imo. but obv im biased

The only songs I really find interesting are Crawl, Sweatpants, 3005, The Party, and No Exit. Even some of these songs don't fully deliver though. 3005 is mostly just has a catchy hook with a bad first verse. The Party is very short and once again interrupts his most interesting and fastest verse. No Exit has one of the coolest dark beats I've heard but his lyrics don't flow well with it and once again there are just constant interruptions throughout the whole song. Extremely annoying.

hmmm I'm trying to understand what you mean by interruptions still. I feel like based on your comments you like long verses with impressive rapping and this album isn't giving that to you. While I understand some of your criticism this album is much more than just a rap album which is what makes it so impressive imo. I feel like by not giving the audience what it wants/expects he pushes the boundaries of how rap is seen and incorporates many other genres with just as much success.

I agree with Impervious, and it's the biggest issue I have with this album. It happens in Zealots, too, there are so many interesting ideas that are either too abrupt or interrupted. Which is intentional, as I understand, but then that means I have a problem with the album's presentation as a whole. I mean, that verse on the last half of Telegraph Ave. was amazing, but it doesn't feel substantial enough. Whilst it works well on tracks like The Party, part of me wishes the song was at least 30 seconds longer. Only tracks that I find fulfilling are perhaps Sweatpants, 3005 and No Exit.

Blush- couldn't have said better myself. Like I get it's intentional, but to me the album just leaves you wanting more and feeling unsatisfied. I agree, it just isn't substantial enough when he's good.

Just gave this a full listen for the first time after how much I loved Awaken, My Love! Most of the stuff I like is at the beginning (3005, Crawl, etc.). I'm assuming it will probably grow on me, but right now him as a rapper feels way less genuine than he feels as a funky soul dude.
