I listened to a few songs from the new album. It has its moments, but I won't be doing a full listen any time soon. This seems to be the best thing this band has done by a fair margin.

The new album is outstanding as hell. Maybe not the masterpiece this album was, but really close. So many gorgeous parts, so many powerful moments... Haken are easily the best modern prog rock band around.

''Haken are easily the best modern prog rock band around.''

Α bold statement I'm not willing to support, but I acknowledge the reasons behind it. Haken are great, maybe more than just that, but not the best.

I'd throw Anathema, Steven Wilson, Moon Safari, and Thank You Scientist up there, but ever since Oceansize abandoned and Dream Theater became uninteresting, I think Haken have honestly dominated the prog rock realm.

Man, I half-love Thank You Scientist for the main reason I half-love most modern prog rock I have been rec'd here: the vocals. Does any prog rock have more... restrained vocals? Haken grew on me and Leprous is pretty much the same (or vice versa, idc) but I'm not a huge fan of theatrical(?) vocals. I don't know what I want, but I'm asking for it now.

Steven Wilson is at the forefront. Other than that, we have Leprous (of course), Riverside (don't know if you're going to like the vocals, but they are really soothing), Beardfish and Motorpsycho keep the 70's vibe without sounding cheesy, Gazpacho is an excellent proof that prog can be forward-thinking in 2016, Ihsan's work is really good (so far I'v echecked 3 of his albums, they all slay), Rishloo (instant love) still deliver top notch alt/prog rock and without a doubt, Mastodon. Newer bands are Ne Obliviscaris (death prog), Native Construct, David Maxim Micic (djent-y but not ''chug-chug-chug'' type. Really melodic and refreshing) and iamthemorning (their latest offering was amazing).

Satellites are Votum, POS (it's been a while since they last made music, so I guess we have to wait and see), Earthside (superb debut, but they're still young), Serdce (their last one was amazing, packed with ideas and emotion) and I'll have to add a personal favourite, Need.

The list goes on, too many great bands out there. Not diminshing Haken (wouldn't dare to) but they are definitely not the best prog band out there (nor the most innovative)

A lot of those mentioned are a lot more than just prog rock, though-- while I'd say that Haken leans more towards progressive metal, I do think their last two albums have been mainly steeped in progressive influences from the 70s and 80s, so I wouldn't include Mastodon or NeO in the discussion since the music is so different. For bands that have adapted a DT-esque sound, I'd say Haken do it the best.

Thanks so much for the recs. I've definitely been sleeping on a bunch of those, especially Steven Wilson. I like the crossover bands a bit, so I appreciate you including them. I really liked the most recent NeO and I'm into old Mastodon- I should really try the new stuff again.

I've been rec'd Earthside a few times and have heard of a few others you mentioned, but I will look into some of those and see how I like them.

Hmm, you're probably right about the genres, so I would naturally ommit Serdce, too.

Strictly talking about DT sound, I guess Haken do take the lead, without implying they are a mere DT clone. They are phenomenal. Either way, they present us high quality music, so it doesn't really matter.

A new-prog band that you might also like is Subsignal. I discovered them simultaneously with Earthside.

I will say this about the new one, his vocals are super strong. My favorite part of it so far.

Earthrise, The Architect, The Endless Knot, and Bound by Gravity are all sooooo good on the new one. I really like all of the songs, but Earthrise and Bound by Gravity are so beautiful

I'm honestly really growing to appreciate the more vocally driven vibe of Affinity. His vocals are awesome.
