Just stumbled over my CD of this. I had forgotten that the member portraits are postcards.
Seems like a strange choice but ok. It somehow makes sense with the title. Cos they don't look happy at all.

This album is a lot better than I remember. I don't think I ever gave it enough credit.

Yeah, it's a great one. I'll always have great memories with it too, since it was my very first album of theirs when I was still a teenager

My intro to them was actually the album they released after this, because I was browsing YT and the cover looked cool.
I might discog run these guys, I never really went too far in. Honestly I remember liking their sound established here more than I ever did their doom records, but my tastes have changed so they're due for a reevaluation probably.
I might join that 5 soon honestly lol, the songwriting here is far better than I recognized.

@Mars: Yeah, I definitely recommend the discog run. Just keep in mind that there are three distinct periods of their catalogue:
Dance of December Souls/Brave Murder Day: Death/doom era
Discouraged Ones - Night is the New Day: Alternative/gothic metal era
Dead End Kings - present: Progressive rock/metal era
But what I love about the band is that all three eras still have their distinct stamp on them. Regardless of what album you choose, you still know it's a Katatonia record

I remember not enjoying the doom era, but I could always change my mind.

The doom era sucks. Sounds like bootlegged Morningrise, just listen to Opeth if you want that stuff

"Dance of December Souls/Brave Murder Day: Death/doom era"
don't gloss over the EPs. Jhva Elohim Meth, For Funerals to Come, and Sounds of Decay contain some of their best material of this era.

^ Yeah, I'm aware. I was just referring to the full-lengths when making that list

I think I mentioned these in another album thread, but has anyone heard the two re-recorded early demo songs they quietly released last year?

^Listened to it last night and was not only shocked at Jonas doing harsh vocals but that he could still do harsh vocals well

I think I've seen a guitarist do those live before, is he still capable of it himself?

Anders Nystrom did harsh vocals live up until a few years ago, when Jonas started doing them again. he sounds better than ever

Jonas is one of those singers who's actually gotten better and better over the years. I remember watching the video of him performing Ayreon's "Comatose" back in 2018 and being blown away... he absolutely killed it

I always vibe these guys in October-Feb but right now it’s 36 degrees and I’m melting and their music does not suit that at all (except from now hearing Jonas say ‘it’s the month of July’ in my head)
