because he didn't write them i don't see them as being part of his musical/songwriting progression - I know he arranged them but at least to me they both stand as outliers compared to the rest of the debut

of course they are. beyonce's new album is a part of her musical progression and like all other pop artists ever she didn't write a single song herself.
plus those two covers are completely unique and arguably way better than the originals (limit to your love cover definitely is.

that is a very valid point but i would personally differentiate between songs that a written for you (where presumably beyonce acts as a sort of musical director figure with at least some influence on the general aesthetic) and a cover, where the basic elements of the song are nothing to do with you unless you want to stretch the definition of 'cover' to its absolute breaking point
i do agree that both covers are better than the originals, they're my favourite tracks on the debit along with i never learnt to share

i'm not so sure about that. i don't know for sure how much input she has in particular in her tunes but i know many a pop artist really has almost nothing to do with the music produced for them. its just written to be catchy and appeal to the masses and then the singer picks it up and sings over it and puts their face on it. but again thats a generalization i cant say i've read up on this stuff extensively. i do know however that Drunk In Love is a case of her pretty much having nothing to do with it considering it was originally written for some awful rapper guy named Future or some shit and then Beyonce picked it up and put it out faster so he got fucked over and couldn't put it on his album.

i would say that this definitely is the case with Limit to Your Love though. Many of the most important basic elements of his version are completely original to his version. dem nuances
My favourite James Blake song is I Mind

Went to see James Blake tonight. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the songs from Overgrown sounded very good live.

I get distracted when the audience cheers gets caught in his loop pedal and it sounds demented when pitch shifted/whatever FX he adds to it.

I liked that he did all the voice FX live. I didn’t notice the audience getting caught up in the vocal loops. Maybe we were just a quiet audience.
