"you touched on something really based though... a lot of "writing" in media that isn't literature tends to get praised for simply daring to tackle certain subjects, regardless of how well its done"
I'll admit I have this problem. There's so many movies and albums where I approach it with kid gloves because I sympathize with the message

"you touched on something really based though... a lot of "writing" in media that isn't literature tends to get praised for simply daring to tackle certain subjects, regardless of how well its done, even if its as subtle as a brick through the window... not just in music but film, tv, video games... oops, stepping on too many toes today maybe ["
I mean, I kind of agree, but I also think that, unlike literature, games, movies and specially music are way more limited to deliver these messages. While in a book you can take as much time to develop a concept in any way you like, in music lyrics have to be way, WAY shorter and need to fit with the song's melody; sometimes even needing to be repeated over and over (choruses for example) to fit the song. In this case, the melody or "sound" in general of a song help to complement the lyrics in delivering the message, but you certainly can't expand on concepts as freely as in a book
Games and movies aren't as restricted as music but they also have to deal with issues of length or, in the case of games, gameplay, which takes a an obviously big part of the game itself.
So yeah, I don't think it is nowhere near as easy to get deep on mediums like music, games or movies, but these ones also have other instruments like atmosphere, melody, cinematography, gameplay, etc, etc that help to deliver a message in a way that's as effective as a book, even if it isn't as "developed" at first glance
I'm not saying this is always the case though, of course

Yeah weaving narrative into songwriting is damn near impossible. I feel there’s a ton of artists who throw conventional musicality out the window in favor of profound lyricism and I’m generally against that.

Also I feel the best way to get people into Steely is to start em off with the hits off their first album. If you don’t like Do It Again there’s something fuckin wrong with you.

Yeah, I feel like Steely Dan and Billy Joel were two of the best artists to weave narrative into songwriting back in that era. That's why The Stranger is one of my all-time favorite albums... the way the music and lyrics compliment each other, especially on Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, is just amazing

The big thing to me is you have to be willing to work with the medium. Scenes for an Italian Restaurant is so good because it tells a story AND keeps the listener entertained with a strong melody, several complementary subsections, and emotive lyrics on a line-by-line basis. Perfect song tbh, really hard to accomplish something like that.

So it's official... I'm fucking addicted to this album, and my next song (which I'm writing right now) will be like if you mixed the style of this record with some soul and prog elements
I'm already mapping out the jazz chords as we speak :D

Yeah, I'll be putting out the instrumental version of the song this weekend :D I've been wanting to put out a record that mixes soul and prog together, and I think Steely Dan have finally shown me the way :]

This.
I've tried to share the Dan with multiple people over the past year, and yeah, it's damn hard. My girlfriend *did* acknowledge yesterday, when I was jamming Deacon Blues, that it could have been recorded at any time and sounded pristine.

So my song's getting pretty interesting. So far I'm alternating between 11/8, 9/8, and 6/8 time signatures and the piece is sounding like a mix of Black Cow, Your Gold Teeth II and Brand X's Euthanasia Waltz... gonna be super crazy but smooth at the same time, lol
